slight gain In new business In the
western pine country for the week
ending Aug. 10 compared with the
previous week, was reported by the
Western Pine association today. New
business totaled 38,088,000 feet, 4 per
cent above the week before, but about
26 per cent under the three-year
weekly average for August.
Shipments were 44,168,000 feet and
production 60,377,000 feet, putting
production at 35.0 per cent of capac
ity compared with 43.7 per cent for
the previous week, and 20.1 per cent
for the year to date.
Current orders were 27 per cent of
sawmill capacity.

PORTLAND, Aug. 23 Seven of
the nine road Jobs opened for bids
yesterday, totaling $528,116, wore
awarded by the state highway com
mission last night at tho close of an
all-day session. The commission to
day was expected to award about half
million cellars more work on bids to
be opened during the morning.
All but one of the projects awarded
yesterday were to be paid from NRA
funds, launching the federal recovery
program In Oregon. All bids opened
today will Involve federal moneys.
Contract awards Included:
Dixle-Llme section of the Old Ore
gon Trail, 4.00 miles of grading In
Baker county, awarded to Theodore
Arenz, Portland, $01,937. Other low
bidders: Fred H. Slate, Portland,
$102,900, and Myers lc Coulter, Seattle
$109,495. Fourteen bids were re
ceived, of which seven were from
outside of the state.

with his very talented assistant. Miss
Ruth Hill, Hollywood stunt girl, pre
sented their daredevil illusion, the
coffin escape, during which Miss Hil!
was handcuffed and shackled and a
Siberian torture collar placed around
her neck which had 25 feet of welded
chain, which was completely wrapped
around her body. Next she was placed
Into a coffin supplied 'by an under
taker and the ltd screwed down. In
less than ten seconds Miss Hill was
seen sitting on the outside of the
casket much to the amazement of
the crowd of spectators. This demon
stration took place outside the R. K.
O- Orpheum theatre and about three
thousand persons saw it. Van tine has
arranged to show the same effect at
all performances during his engage
ment at the local theatre.
