Poems by Local
Writers Are To
Appear In Print
Several La Orande writers will be
represented In an anthology ol Ore
gon poetry to go to press early In
August. Published by the Now Uni
versity Press of Corvallls, and edited
by Dallas Moore, the book will ap
pear before the xlrst of September.
In this volume of about ISO pages,
to be bound In cloth, will be repre
sentative verse written during the
past few years by Oregon residents.
About twenty professional writers
have contributed, besides many new
writers. Each writer will be repre
sented by one poem. The book will
contain a foreword by Dr. J. B. Hor
ner, of the Oregon State college, and
a preface of a biographical nature by
Harold Hunt, editor of the Poot's
Corner In the Oregon Journal.
V - The material thus far has been
drawn largely from periodicals pub
lished In Oregon, but writers whose
' work has not been read by the com-
pliers may submit material to them.
Preference will be given to short
verse, and no poem submitted should
contain more than 24 lines.

HOLDS SERVICES

son, of Pendleton, held service at the
Ascension Episcopal church Sunday
morning. Rev. Tennyson and family
and Rev. Clarence Kopp and family,
of La Grande, are staying In the As
cension grove for the summsr months.

year, that it is an ideal camping
place. -

has appropriated $225,000 to provide

SIXTH GRADE
VISITS PAPER
The sixth grade of the Ackerman
Training school visited the Observer
office and Nelson's printing office
yesterday. The children are studying
printing as a part of their work unit.
"The History of Records." They havo
gone back to the first records and
have traced the history through the
ages. Miss Mayme McCarter and a
group of student teachers are direct
ing the group.
CARPERS HAVE
BABY DAUGHTER
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Carper are
the parents of a baby daughter born
on July 10 at the Grande Honc'e hos
pital. They make their home at
Promise.
ODD FELLOWS
TO PRACTICE
The Odd Fellows will practice to
morrow evening for the initiatory
degree which will be used on Aug; 4
when a group of new members are
Initiated. They will gather at the
hall tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock.

Mrs, Ellen Stoddard has returned
to La Orande to spend the summer.
She formerly made her home In La
Orande but the last winter she has
spent with her son, Robert, who l
student at Stanford university. Since
the close of school she has been in
Salt Lake City visiting.
On Vacation
Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Davis are
taking a trip to Roseburg where
they will spend a vacation with tho
former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. t. E.
Davis. While in Southorn Oregon,
Mr. Davis plans to spend a great deal
of the time fishing In the North
Umpqua river.

Rev, and Mrs. S. E. McKenney, of

La Orande with friends.

Orande visiting for the summer vaca
tion. The past month she has spent

leave Sunday for a vacation trip
through Idaho during which they
will visit Now York Stores lu Boise,
Nampa and Caldwell, Mr. Zlon is

Mo., to Join Mrs. Fleming and spend
a week visiting Mrs. W. 8. Snook and
family and Mrs. C. M. Humphreys.
Mrs. Fleming has been here for sev
eral weeks visiting her mother, Mrs.
Snook, and her sister, Mrs. Hum
phreys, and will accompany them to
their home by motor.

On Way to Ontario
C. E. Strickland, of Salem, statu
engineer, and Dr. W. L. Powers, of
Corvallls, head of .the bureau of soils
at Oregon State college, passed
through La Grande Tuesday on their
way to Ontario where they will at
tend an irrigation meeting. They
also plan to attend like meetings In
La Orande and Pendieton later.

Mrs. Bob Miller and children and
her sister, Miss Dickie Matthles, of
Arco, Idaho, 1 stopped In La Grande
Tuesday to visit with Miss Myrtle
Hoyt. They have toeen m Pomeroy,

Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Parlett have

plan to remain until Saturday. Dur
