Shower Monday Evening
Mlis Maravene Kiddle, who expects
to leave Boon for Portland alter a
visit In La Orande with hur parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kiddle, and her
grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred H.
KlcMle, was complimented at a bridge
party and handkerchief shower last
night by Mrs. F. L. Robinson. Eight
young women were Invited for the
evening.
Prizes at bridge were presented to
' Miss Virginia Bramwell, first, and
Miss Phyllis Peterson, consolation.
The shower was a surprise to the
guest of honor, the handkerchiefs
, being presented to .her when the re
freshments were served.
Quests for the evening were Miss
Kiddle, Miss Catherine Spaeth, Miss
Mac Waldroff, Miss Ruth Murchison.

set from La Grande were guests Of
Mrs., Belle Hess, of Union, Sunday at
a swimming party at Cove. After
swimming refreshments were served

HENRY TOWNSEND
DIES SUNDAY AT
SHERIDAN, WYO.
Henry Townsend, a reslden of
Elgin for a grent ninny years and
well known over the valley, died
Sunday at Sheridan, Wyoming, where
he was visiting relatives, according
to word received hero.
Mr. Townsend, who was 85 yenrs
of age. was the father of Wesley, Roy
and Dave Townsend and Mrs. Dora
Croghan, all of Elgin.

. The directors of school district No.
1 met last night to authorize the
clerk to sign u contract with the
non-high school board for tuition
for pupils from surrounding districts
which Co not have high schools.
The contract, the same as those for
all high school districts of tho coun
ty, provides that the high school dis
trict receive actual cost, same to be
figured as found by computation at
the end of tho school year from the
district's records. Last year, the cost
per high school pupil In the La
Grande district was about 57 cents
per day, and this varied In the several
districts from 51 to 76 cents, One
half payment- will be made In Jan
uary and the balance next July.
