The fighting Indian leader hit his

out a triple and two singles and drovo
in four runs, This was not quite
enough to win and the champion
Beavers 'marked up their second
straight victory C-0. Lou Koupol
pitched the Portland victory and,
along with his battery mate, Earl
Sheely, 'hit lor tho circuit.
The Oaks couldn't field last night
but they could lut and that was
enough to give them a 13-0 decision
at Baoramento. Though booting five
chances In the field, the Oaks backed
up Pitcher Roy Joiner with 18
blngles, Including a pair of doubles
and a single by Frenchy Uhalt and
three singles by Art. Veltman.

Tommy Loughran
Comes Back And
Conquers Hamas
NEW YORK, June 22 (P) Tommy
Loughran, the old master of ring
strategy. Is back In the fistic lime
light again. He no longer Is regarded
.as a contender fnr championships of
any 'kind, but after being regarded as
"all ''through" a half dozen times
fiuioe he was knocked out by Jack
Sharkey four years ago, he has re
turned to tlie "big time" and big
crowds with a ten round decision ovor
his bid rival, Stevo Hamas.
Carrying on a quiet comeback cam
paign. Tommy staged perhaps the
greatest comeback of them all before
10,000 excited funs at tho Yankee
stadium lost night. For eight rounds
he barely staved orf tlie rushes of tho
fiery Wellington, N. J., youngster, ab
sorbing qulto a bit of punishment,
lie gave Hamas a lesson In tho use
of the straight arm such as Steve
never received, on the Penn State
football field, poking his left into
Hamas' face with almost monotonous
regularity, but that wasn't quite
enough. '
Then In tho ninth, bleeding from
cuts' over both eyes and apparently
not far from a knockout, Loughran
suddenly switched from boxing to
fighting. Ho rocked. Homus' head
back with hard rights aud loltn, slug;
gedjiand swatted on oven trains and
woni'tho last two rounds and a close
decision. ,

regarding the American position.

They wero fearful that tho United

That the French had been willing
to quit the conference over the

parently safely through this major
crisis, both tho Americans and the
British expressed highest (hopes of
real accomplishment.
The issuance of the American stab-
