DESPITE WORLD
ECONOMIC CRISIS
BOSTON, June 10 An encouraging
report of the growth of Rotary In the
face of adverse economlo conditions
will be shown when the officers re
port to the 24th annual convention
of Rotary International here June
26-30.
The gain In the number of new
Rotary clubs elected to membership
In the past twelve months Is approxi
mately fifty per oent greater than the
previous similar period. The number
of Rotarlans Is on the Increase, too,
with a small net gain over the figures
of Inst July 1. '
The list of countries and geo
graphical regions in which there are
Rotary clubs will be increased by
three, in the official reports' to the
convention. .
Rotary clubs have been elected this
year in Riga, Latvia, in Tanger, Mo
rocco (International Zone) and in
Sofia, Bulgaria.
There have been almost a hundred
new Rotary clubs elected this year,
about one-third of them in Europe
where the number, of new clubB this
year is double that of last year.
These figures are the first-hand
reports which have been gathered by
President Clinton P. Anderson, of
Albuquerque, N. M., In his visits with
almost one-fourth of the entire
Rotary membership, confirm the op
tlmlstlo view of Rotary officials.
President Anderson will deliver his
report at the opening session of the
convention Monday afternoon, June
20, following the reports of Secretary
CheBley R. Perry and Treasurer Ru
fus P. Chapln. These latter two are
from Chicago. '
The president has recently returned
from a trip to Great Britain and
Northern Europe. At the conference
of the Rotarlans of Great Britain and
Ireland, President Anderson read a
message from Premier Ramsay Mac
Donald saying "I regard Rotary's
work for International understanding
and cooperation as of the greatest
Importance. Business - men should
take the foremost place In the ranks
of the ambassadors of world peace."
At Boston June 26th there will be
assembled Borne eight thousand busi
ness and professional men, and mem
bers of their families, coming from
fifty to sixty different nations.
After the formalities and reports
of the opening session Monday after
noon, the convention will have four
more days of business sessions. The
general theme of the meeting on
Tuesday Is "the Individual Rotary
club under survey" and the various
problems of Rotary clubs in differ
ent parts of the world will be dis
cussed thoroughly.
The topic for Wednesday's meet
ing will be International good will
and the speakers will discuss "the
new world order" from 1 various
standpoints economic, Intellectual,
vocational, and Iroin a Rotary stand
point. Tho entire day on Thursday will
be given over tplscusslqrjyOt , and
action uptm the flrtf or more'resolu
tlons and enactments which have
been proposed by Rotary clubs, the
board of directors of Rotary Interna
tional, and a special drafting commit
tee on revision of administrative procedure.

TOMATO SURPRISE
Select tomatoes of even size and
scoop out centers. (Save this part to
serve in salad, or mix with mashed
tuna in sandwiches.) Mix the con
tents of one can of White Star tuna,
flaked, with half as much bread
crumbs, the same amount of chopped
celery, .a tablespoon of onion juice
and season with salt and pepper.
Stuff tomatoes with this mixture and
top with grated cheese. Bake in a
moderate oven for 26 minutes.
OREGON'S TOTAL
TAX BILL PASSES
42-MILLION MARK
SALEM, Ore. VP) Oregon taxes its
citizens a total of $42:042,546 for the
operation, of all governments, state,
city, county, scnoois ana lor otner
purposes. This was revealed with the
Issuance of the summaries of tax lev
ies by the state tax commission. This
was about two per cent less than last
year.
Special taxes for school purposes
lead the list with a total of 11,067,
2S5 annually. Next In line Is that for
special taxes for' cities and towns
amounting to 10,337,085. The state
comes third with 4,800,044 or lees
than one-tenth of the total tax, while
counties come fourth with a total of
4,e03,B02.
Other funds for which large taxes
are collected include county school
and school library, 03,125,653; bond
Interest and redemption S2.126.107;
for general roads tl.373.65a; high
school tuition Sl.280.132; ports 1.
100,487; and Irrigation and drainage
1,008,487.
The balance of tax money will be
used as follows: market roads, $388,-
462; special roads 290,467; fire pa
trol $168,366; reforestation tax $26,455
and miscellaneous $8,726.
Of the total Multnomah county
will pay $16,430,707 per year, with
Lane county second nigh with $2,
015,307 and Clackamas county third
with $1,769,444. Klamath county rates
fourth with the total taxes of $1,706,
617, Clatsop firth with a total of $1.
084,731, and Marlon county sixth with
$1,441,407.
Other county totals Include Baker
$706,811; Benton $506,424; Douglas
$1,008,466; Jackson $1,332,843; Jose
phine $488,852; Umatilla $1,441,407;
and Union county $770,173. Wheeler
county payB the least of the total tax
with a levy of $107,706.
The total tax levy lost year was
$42,079,176.
