INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH
Industrial research is one phase of our national activity
that did not receive a setback because of the depression.
Even where production has been at a standstill during the
past few months, the laboratory has continued to function,
seeking to improve its industry's manufactured products and
perhaps solve its depression problems.
--There were very few industrial research laboratories a
Charter of a century afro. Five hundred were officially listed
lftyears ago. Today there are mK).
- it is reassuring to learn from the American Chemical
society that 51.3 per cent of the industries surveyed hate
actually increased their expenditures for research during the
economic stress of the past two years. Thirty per cent of
them reported a decrease, while 1S.7 per cent reported no
change. , . .
j.. Industry knows that though its wheels may slacken their
speed or stop altogether, and though dividends may have to
be passiid, the laboratory must continue its endless search
for perfection. A lasting lesson was learned during the
depression of 1920 when many industrial research labora
tories were closed, to the irreparable loss of their owners.
.jQut d the laboratory come discoveries which have helped
large industries to weather the period of business depression.
Perhaps a new by-product is discovered., which meets' sin
argent demand. Or perhaps new methods of manufacture
makepossible a considerable cut in the cost of production.
And when business, already showing signs of improve-
jment, again reaches normal health, our whole country will ' rating a u canny
i be better prepared than ever to compete for world trade be- j vl-v "w:uiy sctchen and

T IXC0LX had boon dead many years . . . the world was
-t-t waiting for another Emancipator. To millions of wom
en, slaving over washboards, goose-irons, floor-scrubbing
and lamp cleaning, the responsibilities of housekeeping
meant the loss of leisure, of youth ... of beauty ... of
health itself.
Today's housewife is a woman of affairs with time to de
vote to needful physical and mental recreation. Not one
man ... but a score of inventors, aided by hundreds of
engineers . . . have declared her -henceforth and forever
free." Electricity has liberated womankind!
The humblest home can today afford the convenience of
electrical servants. Tasks, once back-breaking, are accom
plished easily. Electric washers, irons, vacuum cleaners,
ranges and heaters are within everyone's reach. The cur
rent to run them flows from your wall-plug ... at the
lowest cost in history.
