Cherry Dixon, 10 and pretty,
tells her mother she Is going to u
club meeting but Instead meets
Dan Phillips, newspaper repoit
er with whom she Is In love.
Her wealthy parents do not know
she is acquainted with Dan, Cher
ry goes with him to Interview a
bank robber's sweetheart. She
blunders Into underworld head
quarters and a bullet strikes her
arm. Dan takes her to a doctor's
office and then home. He is try
ing to explain what has happened
when Mr. Dixon appears. Dixon
Is very angry aha brandishes a
newspaper containing Cherry'B
picture and an account of the
shooting. He orders Dan from the
house.
Days pass and Sarah, Cherry's
maid, discovers Dan has tele
phoned and been told . the girl Is
out town. Cherry 8 tea 1b out of
the house, meets Dan and ex
plains. He telis her he loves
her. When Cherry arrives home
her father Is waiting and accuses
her of having met the reporter.
Cherry delies her father and he
orders her to apologize or leave.
She. runs out of the house. Later
that evening she finds Dan, tells
him what has happened, and says,
"Let's get married I"
They are married by a justice
of the peace. Friends of Dan's
find them and stage a celebra
tion. Cherry and Dan manage to .
steal away from the party.

CHAPTER X I
Cherry crossed the room and gave
the window shade a tug. Bright
morning sunshine was a fine thing, '
but too much of It was as bad as'
none. It blinded you. -
She tossed her head back, shaking
the tangled mass of dark; hair into
becoming disarray. Then she sat
down in the big chair, leaned back
und surveyed the room.
She made an amusing picture.
Pulled about her and tied securely
at the waist was Dan Phillips' old

dressing gown. A strange purplish
red hue now, the dressing gown had
once been a handsome brocade. It
was many sizes too large.' Cherry
had rolled the, sleeves back, but the
shoulder seams reached almost to
her elbowB. Dainty lace trimmed lin
gerie Bhowed where the dressing gown
fell away. Her buckled pumps were
tiny and narrow, her hose of the
sheerest mesh.
Suddenly she jumped up and
went to the dressing table, -A sheet
of paper lay there, a few words
scrawled on It in pencil. Cherry
picked up the paper and read:
"Cherry I love you. Be ready to
have lunch with nue.
"I'll call some time after 12.
Dan."
She had read the words, at least
a dozen times. At first It had been
a surprise to realize that never be
fore had she seen Dan's "handwrit
ing. That was odd, and, . still it
wasn't. There were so many things
Cherry had yet to learn about this
young husband of hers.
Her husband! The girl's smile be
came a dreamy sort of radiance. She
caught a glimpse of herself in the
mirror and stared, fascinated.
Was that what love did to you?
She seemed an entirely different
person than she had been yesterday.
The, worn-out dressing gown caught
her eye and suddenly the smile be
came a rippling laugh. Of. course
she was a different person. She was
Mrs, Daniel Phillips I
"Oh, I'm so happy!" Cherry sang
aloud. "I'm so happy!" She whirled
In a dashing plrouette .ond flung
herself unon the bed.
Each morning at home Cherry
had started the day' with fruit, hot
rolls and steaming coffee. Usually
they were brought to her bedside on
a tray. Sarah would be there to
nour the coffee and ask if every
thing was as it should be. Sarah
would brine a aullted satin break
fast coat and slip it about the girl's
shoulders to keep her warm while
she ate.
Sarah, bless her Where was sne
and what was she doing how? What
were Cherry's mother and iatner
thinking of the way their daughter
had run off the night before? Were
tho servants whispering and W9n
derlng what had happened? Did
others outside the house know
about It?
For an Instant the elrl felt
naiie of sunt. Her mother would
be worrying. Crying perhaps at this
very moment, unerry lovea ner mom
er. She loved her father, too when
he was not roaring out orders or
' frightening her. Perhaps she should
write a noce-r-
Cherry's chin raised and set in a
firm line. No Indeed! If she wrote
they would imagine she was asking
for forelveness. She could not do It!
The dainty platinum watch on the
girl's wrist reminded her it was
growing late. Almost 10:30. There
would be an hour and a half at
least before Dan telephoned.
What about breakfast?
She decided not to go out for it;
then almost instantly changed her
mind. After all there was nothing
to do until Dan called. A breath of
fresh air and brisk walk would be
Rood for her.
She discarded the dressing robe
and hung it away. Dan's clothing
crowded the tiny closet to over
flowing. As Cherry turned she real
ized what a really hideous room this
was. Dark, dismal paper on the
walls. Worn spots in the carpet.
Two of the dressing table drawers
were pulled out' revealing garments
tossed about. Newspapers and mag
azines in staggering piles littered
tho table and one of the chairs. The
furniture was not only out .of date;
' it; looked aa though It had not been
dusted for days; ., v .

then shrugged. "We won't stay here

The beige crepe Cherry had worn

' It was certainly not a costume to
wear to breakrnst in a restaurant.
Tho tiny cap sleeves and becoming
neckline were of lace, over which
skillful French fingers had labored
for long hours. Too elaborate, too
distinctive in Its simple, unusual
manner of cutting and seaming for
the street.
Still there was no choice. Cherry
slipped the frock over her head and
snapped the fastenings.
Another note for her mental
memorandum; she would have to
buy some clothes.

fresh yellow uniform smiled at Cherry

glanced at the first -page hastily. A

It was only a paragraph. Tho
brief report stated that Miss Cherry
Dixon, aaugnier oi ait. ana Mrs,
Walter J. Dixon of Sherwood
Heights, and Daniel Phillips, re
porter for the Wellington News,
had been married tne mgnt oeroro

ham. The paragraph listed the
schools Cherry had attended, add
ing that she was a popular mem
ber of the younger social set." An
other, sentence stated that Dan was
oh. the. News editorial staff and pre
viously had been employed by the
Sentinel. '
Cherry was flushed and her eyes
bright as she read the lust words.
So everyone knew! Her father' and
mother must have seen that para
graph. Well, they would under
stand now that she had meant what
she said!
Lost in these thoughts Cherry
scarcely noticed when the waitress
returned with ner oraer. one re
membered presently, drank tho
orange juice and coffee and nibbled
at the toast, 'men sne paia ner
bill and departed.

long while before the telephone
rang and his voice came over the

"Hello. That you. Cherry?" (
"Yes, Dan. I'vo been waiting for

"How- or you, baby? Sorry I.,
couldn't give you a ring earlier, but'
I've been chasing all over town.1
Listen, dear, we'll hove to call olf
that lunch date." j
"Oh, Dan!"
"It's bum luck, but there's no way
out of it. I'm parked out here at
the airport and there's no telling
when we'll get away. Those two
girl flyers were due half an hour
ago and we'll have to wait till they
land or word comes they're down.
It wasn't supposed to be my assign- 1
ment, but Groves Is tied up at City
Hall."
"But can't you ?" '
"I can't do anything but stay
here," Dan assured her. 'I hate to
disappoint you, honey, but I can't
heln mvself. Trv to find some way
to amuse yourself and We'll make
up for It with a bang-up dinner
party tonight. Is that all right?"
Reluctantly she told him It was.
Phillips said something that brought
a quick smile to the girl's face and
then the conversation was over.

and started for the door. On the
way down In tho elevator car Cher
ry revised her plans. She remem
bered Malson Madelaine was expen
sive. No, she would go to Stanley's, tho
big department store. Miss Lacey ;

pleasant and helpful. !
Miss Laccy was equal to tho
emergency. Sho greeted Cherry ef
fusively. Yes, she had seen the an
nouncement of the marriage In tho .
newspaper and thought it was ro

And what could sho show the littlo
bride today?
Cherry had set out intending to
be economical. A practical woolen
day dress was what sho wanted.
Something becoming of course but
not fussy. Miss Lacey, beaming,
whisked away to return -with a
frock of glowing spring green over
her arm. Feather-weight to touch.
Exactly right In size. The prico
was $65.
"I'm afraid," nvufribled Cherry,
"that's a little more than I wanted
to pay."
Miss Lacey's brow lifted slightly.
She said quickly that of course she
had less expensive models. If Mrs.
Phillips was Interested In picking
up a really remarkable bargain
there was a little blue novelty mix
ture When Cherry departed almost an
hour later not only the blue novelty
mixture but a printed silk frock
and half a dozen dainty garments
of flesh silk were being packed Into
a box to be delivered to the Bis
maik. The bill totaled $93.70.
Sho stopped at a drug store to
buy perfumed soap and a Jar of
the face cream she always used at
home. Four dollars and fifty cents
on the cashier's check. Back in the
hotel Cherry undressed, bathed and
hurriedly made herself ready for
dinner.
It was after five when she heard
a quick rap at the door. Cherry
rushed forward, beaming.
But it was not Dan Phillips at
the other side of the door.
