CHAPTER VI
" Barah entered the room breath
lessly and shut .the door behind, her.
Her round eyes foretold excitement.
' The girl on the chaise longue did
not turn. Her peach colored negli
gee pulled about the slender figure
molded it gracefully. On her feet
were small gold strapped sandals.
. "Is that you, Sarah?" the girl
asked .Indifferently.
"Yes, Miss Cherry.'
. Something In the woman's voice
made Cherry Dixon raise her eyes,
before she could speak Sarah placed
a finger to her lips, shook her head
forbodlngly and crossed to the
: chaise longue. Then, with Celtic in
stinct for the dramatic, she paused.
"What it is, Sarah?"
"Sh. darllngl Walt till I tell i
you. It's not right, it isn't, and
eomebody'U pay for it! Out and out,

could use. It's not right at all." i

happened?"
' Again old Sarah put a warning
finger to he; lips. "Not so' loud,",
she' cautioned, lowering her tone.

Cherry was sitting bold upright
now. Impatiently she caught the

'; Sarah -sat down beside the girl.
' Well, then." she said, plunging

for Martha to ask if the package
had 'come from Wendells' and Just

lshed. 'No sir,' Martha says, "Miss
Cherry ain't at home and I don't
know when she will be. She's gone

down the telephone I said, 'Martha,

Sarah's protests were useless. They
fell on deaf cars. Repeatedly she
warned the girl that revolt was futile.
Defiance of Walter J. Dixon's orders

Aroused to action, .Cherry was
all at once a whirlwind. She flew

The conspiracy was planned quick- ,
ly. Sarah, her white face an open
revelation, made a reconnoltcrlng ex
pedition to the first floor. She re
turned to report that Mrs. Dixon
was busy with callers. Martha was
on duty In the front of the house
but Cherry could escape unnoticed by
descending the rear staircase and go
ing out through the door that led to
tho garden. Sarah's further part
was to busy herself In the sewing
room and If anyone Inquired for
Cherry to say the girl was asleep in
her bedroom. ......
"May the Lord havo mercy on the
two of us!" Sarah breathed fer-
vently as Cherry put a hand on the

from the curb. He entered the cab.
"Oh, Dan, I was so afraid Id

glowing, her eyes star-bright. ' I

The words were lost In a sob. Cher
ry turned her face away. .
"You mustn't." Phillips said gently.
"You mustn't feel badly any longer.
Please. Cherry look at mc,!"
There was a long pause and then
slowly, hesitantly, the girl turned
her head. " '
"Dan I"
"You darling!"
She whs in his arms, tho velvet

to Dan's. He found her Hps, crushed
them again and again. He thought
tho perfume of her hair was like in
cerise arising about a goddess.
Phillips drew back for an Instant,
staring into the starry eyes.
"You're so sweet, Cherry," he whis
pered, catching her close again. The
words might have been a prayer.
"Then you do care?"
"But didn't you know? You must
have! Oh, Cherry, these last three
days have been rotten I I've been
worried about you. Kepi telephon
ing but I couldn't get any satisfac
tion. After a while I began to think
maybe you didn't want to talk to
me. Couldn't really blame you but
after the things your father said "
It was at that moment that the
taxi driver decided he had endured
enough. For several minutes the
cab hnd own held up by traffic sig
nals. Now the red light was glowing.
"Say." he said In a tone not to. be
Ignored, "where do you people want
to go?"
"Anywhere," pan. told him. "Drive
or, drive out through Jefferson
Park."
The cab moved forward. Cherry's
head' 'nestled comfortably ' against
Dan's shoulder. ' His arm was about
her. Neither realized bow time was
passing.

The monkey promptly slowed down,
thinking Duncy was a sport.
They shortly reached (he station
where the monkey said, "If you
don't care, I'll wait right out hero
In the street and promise I won't
budge."
"Oh, no you won't," tho cop ro

wild ride." And then the cop took
Duncy and the monk before the
Judge.

when a wild horse from the Eastern
Oregon plains galloped across the city
on a mum cast side street.
H. J. MjcMahon,' Portland, got a'
rojio, and sitting astride the hood of 1
a niotor car, started in pursuit and
lassord the horse.
McMahon, an ex-cowboy had not
ridden the ranqo for 22 years.
It was finally returned to tho
