BRASS KNUCKLES?
EVEN as Jerry drew his right
hand back for a punch, Steve
stepped forward and, bending
slightly to the left, tripped the
charging gangster, who lunged tor
ward, Angers clawing desperately
toward the pilot.
At the same Instant Jerry threw
the full weight ot .his powerful
body Into a ferritin uppercut. It
was a masterpiece of. timing,
smashing full upward to the point
o( Luccl's chin. " "-' '
Luccl's head snapped back. He
continued his precipitate fall to the
floor and hit with a crash that
caused the windows to, rattle In
their frames. He lay there, utterly
limp, where he had fallen.
Jerry swung around hastily to
face Ashwood. The crlpplo's right
liaud held tho blue steel butt of nn
automatic which was outlined
against the cream-colored fabric or
the pongee suit. Ills eyes were
What ho!" beamed Ashwood, re
garding him In feigned astonish
ment "Are you, with us .again,
Ono-shot?"
'Was It you that slugged me?"
Luccl's malignant oyes glared at
Emory.
"No, old timer, but 1 wish I had.
Someono beat me to It"
"It was 1," Interrupted Jerry,
smiling politely. "May 1 help you
up? If It happens that you aren't
satisfied, get on your feet, I'll try
to polish you off, this time."
Lucel rose painfully, faced Jerry
and doubled his fists. He swayed
on his feet and nearly fell. His
opponent' watched htm with grow
ing admiration.
"You have plenty of spunk," he
said. "Let me put you to bed for
a spell. .Then, If .you like, yon
can totter out here and take a fall

"I'll put him In the sheets," of
fered Emory. "You stay here."
' The bright flaro of animosity In
the hard brown, eyes faded and as
Emory put his sturdy arm about
the gangster's shoulders, Lucel per
mltted himself to be led from the
room.
Tho minister, who had watched
the conflict with pale face and wide
open oyes, walked unsteadily to the
nearest chair and fell Into It.
"I am nearly fifty years ot age,"
combination of these procedures.
The method employed depends upon
the age and condition of the patient,
the acuteness or chronlcity of hla dis
ease, tile degree of Intoxication uuf
fcred, and tho results obtained by
preliminary trcatmont.
The acutely 111 young patient may
at times be treated successfully medi
cally through the use of Iodine, to
gether with rest and other measures.
However, failure to . Improve- under
audi treatment may necessitate sur-

Tho effects on the body Qf the In

cumulative and the patient who has
suffered the disease for a long time
makes a poor operative risk, and Is
not as likely to have good results
from his operation as the person
spared the prolonged effects of the
disease.
Thyrotoxicosis, as the condition
toxic goiter Is termed, may affect the
heart, the nervous system, tho dlgos-
tlon and excretory organs, as well as
the function of the higher levels of
the brain.
In certain conditions X-ray and ra-dltuu-may
be employed in the treat
ment of toxlo goiter. Which ot these
treatments to- employ is a matter to
bo determined by careful study of
each Individual caae.
The patient who suffers from
tcxle goiter should not attempt to
dictate to his physician the method
of treatment, merely because the one
he prefers has been known to be ef
fective on someone of his acquaint

"Great Caesar!" he breathed,
"let's see your brass knuckles, Cap

"Don't use them," retorted Jerry,
curtly.
A3 suddenly as It had begun, the
tension In the quiet room snapped.
Ashwood's laugh was almost gay as
he shoved the automatic Into Its
armpit holster. Yet there was a
cutting edge to his laughter 'which
made Stevens and Emory glance
sharply at him. The natural color
had flowed back Into his cheeks but
there was an odd twist to his Hps
which belled tho merry laughter.
"My congratulations!" Ho bowed.
"How careless of me not to have
noted the budding romance. And
how tactful ot me to have supplied
the minister." It occurred to Jerry
that Ashwood , was sparring for
time, readjusting kls mind to the
altered circumstances. "I'll con
fess that It has taken me quite by
surprise. Miss Went pardon, Mrs.
Calboun, would It quite shatter
your young heart to be forced to
leave your bridegroom tomorrow?"
"It would!" snapped Nancy.
Except for a slightly heightened
color on her lovely checks, Nancy
might have bocn a conventional
bride accepting her first congratu
lations. Jerry, close by her side,
stared truculently at Ashwood,
ready to precipitate Immediate hos
tilities If the cripple turned out to
be a poor loser. Emory looked at
Nancy, winked openly at Jerry,
then stepped Into the breach. Turn.
Ing to Ashwood, he suggested Ira
pndently:
"Well, old timer, how about set
ting the bridal party up to the
drinks?" .
The thoughtful expression faded
from the crlpplo's eyes.
"Excellent," he agreed, clapping
his hands. The steward appeared
Instantly. "Alfred, have we any
champagne left In tho bins?" The
steward nodded. "Good. Serve It,
please.", ? j
There was a groan from the limp
form on the floor. Lucel stirred
uneasily, then sat up.
ho announced profoundly, "and
never In my life have I witnessed
such brutality.".
"Parson, stick around," "grinned
Jerry. "It's my opinion that you
are In right at the beginning. We're
just warming up for some real
fights."
Dr. Tltherlngton fanned himself
with a newspaper. The lanky Bos
toner returned just as the steward
brought in tho buckets of Ice from
which protruded the necks of sev
eral champagne bottles.
"Calhoun," said Ashwood, watch
ing the golden bubbles rise In bis
goblet, "I would be almost tempted
to postpone my retirement from
this profitable and diverting rack
eteering It I could persuade you
and Battles to become my right
hand men."
"Not sure I wouldn't take up
your offer, Ashle," retorted Emory.
"1 almost dread the end ot this
party."
"You should be ashamed of your
self!" suddenly boomed Dr. Tlther
lngton, in a voice which almost
shook tho goblet from Emory's
hand. "Imagine! A young man of
breeding and Intellect, even consid
ering casting his lot with these
persons!" ,
Ho suddenly caught Ashwood's
oyo and collapsed, flushing.
"You woro saying?" The
cripple's eyebrows were arched In
polite interrogation.
"Yeah, wc all know what ho was
going to say." Stevens came to
tho harassed man's rescue. "He's
right, too. Lot of comfort you're
going to be to yourself In your old
age, Ltmpy. As a matter of fact,
though, you're about as old as
you'll ever get, right now."
"Dear, dear, Banquo at the feast!
Why be so pessimistic when we
woro ell so merry?" Ashwood
sighed, then cast a sardonic glance
at Jerry and Nancy. "Why so pen
sive, bride and bridegroom? You
aro not, by chance, regretting your
rashness already?"
