Pacific School of Religion, Dr. Wil
liam P. Bade, director, cabled from

Dr. Bade began his excavations at
Tell-en-Nasbeh in 1926 and his pres

research. This summer's work will

Tbe frail figure in the deck chair
stirred uneasily. His oyes had bo
come weary and old.
"I'm -afraid not, Luccl. I don't

all I want now. And so havo my
men. I've shared with them and
when we are through our efforts
here, we're going to break up as
an organized unit. For my part, I'm
going to retire." .
He looked far Into the northern
sky, focussing his eyes Intently.
"Of course," he added, "there's,
the ever-present element ot uncer
tainty which makes this a stimu
lating profession. Plans are sub
ject to change without notice. For

Nancy and Luccl, followed the
line ot bis pointing finger, saw a

they watched it, the faint pulsing

hastily dismounted his machine gun
and carried It beneath the sheltering
leaves ot a palm. Another guard
appeared, who began to do things
to the breech of the gun. Three
men dasbed but of the service door
of the house and raced down to the
hangar. Presently tbe entire Island
shook to tbe thundering noise of
the amphibian's engine. A man ap
peared at the hangar door, dressed
in coveralls and helmet. He stood
there, gazing alertly at the porch,
as If awaiting soma sign from the
white-haired cripple.
