MUSCLE INJURIES
With the advent of the outdoor
sport season, there Is a widespread
Increase la muscle, tendon and Joint
Injuries. v t
Some of these are incidental to
such games as baseball and tennis.
Others, on the other hand, result
from the Injudicious and excessive
use of the muscles In violent exer
cise. It Is not ordinarily appreciated
that muscles . may be responsible
for damage to themselves by vir
tue of their own power of contrac
tion. While an uncommon form of
Injury, muscles have been known to
rupture or break. ,
' Muscle Injuries may also be due
to external violence. A blow upon
a mUBCle during a boxing bout or
as the result of being hit by a
ball, a bat or other hard objoct,
may cause a temporary paralysiB
of the affected muscle and a partial
rupture of the muscle fibers,
Contracted muscles are particu
larly likely to suffer from such In

Muscle strain Is commonly the
result of unaccustomed violent exer
cise. Occasionally the vlolenceo Is
great enough to rupture a few of the
fibers within the muscle substance
Itself. This Is particularly likely to
be tho case when the muscle affected
has a specially tendor spot,

majority of Instances of musclo

Heat, massage and moderate exer
