lowlands are yielding a golden har
vest for formers who have turned to
celery as a cash crop.
Although this season has been
considered by celery growers as an
"off year." upwards of 65.000.000 has
poured Into farmers' pockets for tho
approximately 8,000 oar looc of
celery shipped out of tho state.
Sanford, which ordinarily ships
about 20 per cent of the nation's
crop, sent out this spring about fi.OOO
cars, by rail, truck and water the
rail shipment being 4.980 cars. Rail
shipments from the state totaled
7,902 cars.
Florida, California In Race
Florida and California have been
neck and neck in celery shipments
tor the past decade, with New York
state third and Michigan fourth.
Florida and California begin harvest
ing their crops in February and end
shipments by the middle ot May. The
New York and Michigan crops are
ready tor harvest during the summer.
Sanford has been for many years
the leading celery shipping center
of Florida. Sarasota, however, has
forged to the front within the past
few years, and this season shipped
nearly 25 por cent ot the state's
crop.
One Grower Ships 1,179 Curs
The total shipments from Saraso
ta county were in round numbers,
1,800 cars, with 1,179 cars produced
by a single grower the Palmer
Farms. The Palmers have spent large
sums draining and adapting their
large tract to celery production and
thlB year's crop, while not so large
as that of last year, has brought
good returns, through co-operative
selling.
Florida growers this season ship
ped their celery to markets as far
west as Denver, north to Duluth and
Detroit and east to New York and
Portland, Me. Later in tho year,
Michigan and New York celery prob
ably will be ottered on Florida markets.
