AL SMITH SAYS

running mate?"
"I haven't thought that out yet,"
he replied. '
Kooftevelt Talk Ifcillyhoo
Smith reiterated that talk about
Roosevelt being nominated on tho
first ballot was "a llttlo ballyhoo."
1 ''I thought you described that In
New York as a bcdtlmo story," some
ono suggested.
'"Well, that is a kind of modified
ballyhoo," Smith replied. -
He refused to predict how many
votes the New York delegation would
give him.
f-Anked about his part In tho "stop
Roosevelt," movement, Smith sold:
"There la nothing to that. I'm
combatting a stop Smith movement
that commenced ono year and a half
ago."
."Why do you oppose Roosevelt?" he
was asked.
"I want myself nominated."
i , "Who Is your second choice?"
haven't got any. I am for my
self alone."
Smith said he did not believe the
convention would abrogate the two
thirds nominating rule. Asked If he
would support the nominee of tho
convention, he said It was not neces
sary to "talk about that at this
time."
' "Will you urge on economic plank?"
"I can't tell until I see the pro
duct of the committee."
Hague to Maiuige
Smith said he had appointed Mayor
Prank Hague of Jersey City as his
floor manager.
"Ho leads the grand march," tho
1028 nominee added with a grin.
"Nointnnta Me."
Asked what the Democrats should
do on tho whole to assure success
In November, Smith replied:
"Writs an honest straightforward
and clear platform and nomlnatw me."
! "How many ballots will that take?"
I "That depends on how fast the
delegates can see."
- Smith said It depended entirely
upon developments between now and
tho first day of the convention next
. Monday whether ho would address
tho convention on any issue.
I , Ho said he was opposed "to a cash
bonus plank but that he did not care
to state the reasons at this time.
"What about Speaker Oarncr's
statement (urging prohibition re
peal)?" : "Tho more the merrier," Smith said,
.concluding the Interview.
'Smith said he favored Jouett
Shouso for permanent chairman, and
would tako the floor if nccesnnry In

the fight to nominate him. Ho added,
howovcr, . that he believed , Shouso
would1 be elected without a contest
on tho floor.
Ha opened his press conference In
a manner reminiscent of his 1028
campaign days. After announcing he
had a statement, he shook hands with
numerous friends among the news
papermen while the coplco were being
pasted out.
Close behind Smith, Senator Hull
of Tennessee, -prominently mentioned
as chairman of tho resolutions com
mittee, arrived with tho statement
that he found the concensus of wets
and dryH In tho party to be for a
plan submitting to the people the
question of repeal or retention of the
