Wearv from almost 36 hours of con

the planks to the restless convention.
As Garfield concluded, the tall, sil

a demand for aubmiiwlon of prohibi

majority in the galleries and many
on the floor were with him and

Two hours debate were grantedho
president's leaders Garfield, Secre
tary Mills and John L. McNab, of
California rallied the convention
agalnut the repealers headed by
Bingham and Dr. Nicholas Murray
Butler, of New York. If the verdict
had been on cheering alone the lat

Tho administration prohibition

attention on "many pressing national
problems;" opposed submission con

The rejected Bingham substitute
called for Immediate resubmission of
prohibition to state conventions foi
retention or repeal, advocating state
liquor control in event or repeal.

Every one was gratified at the
American decision, ho said.
A period of political tranquility
