Clearing Slide
From Road Near
Lostine River

LOSTINE (Special) Some time
during the winter, a gigantic earth
and snow slide .occurred on the Los
tine river above , the Pole bridge. It
Is about hair p mile in length and
took huge trees and boulders down
the mountain, completely filling the
river at Box canyon. R. B. Bowman
and soveral .other men have been
working there for days trying to
clear the road for traffic. Another
t;ide is .reported up near the Lapover
cabin. - -
Lostine sportsmen arc very indig
nant over the fact .that a screen
has been placed across the mouth
of the Lostine river to prevent the
salmon from running up the stream.
This also keeps other fish out. Los
tine iriv.y Is a natural spawning
place for salmon.
James Do'wns, who spent the
Winter In Freewater, returned home
last week. . ' . ,
Mo. Frank JPearco entertained, a
few friends Saturday evening In
honor of her husband's birthday an
niversary. The evening was spent
visiting. Refreshments of Ice cream
and. cake were served to these guests:

Calvin Plants has received news of
tho death of ,hls mother, Mrs, ..Grace
McCiUlough, who died In a sanator
ium near Huntington Park. Cal. The
funeral was at Pasadena.. Calvin has
spent the past two years here with
his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George
Dodge, and is a Junior In the Lostine
High school.
Mrs. Roy Cook and two children
have returned from Union where
they visited her mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Chandler, of
Baker, visited Mrs. Wm. Wlggans
Tuesday. Mr. Chandler is Mrs. Wlg
gans' nephew.
Mrs. Anna Nolan had her child
ren as guests on Mothers' day and
all enjoyed a lovely dinner together.
Mrs. Elizabeth Meredith and baby
con arrived Monday from Klamath
Falls for a visit with her mother,
firs. Martha Swart, and also to wit
ness . the graduation of her sister,
Miss Ruth Swart.
Tho foundation for the new Christ
ian church has been completed and
work on the building has started.
Marlon Hammack has been en
gaged to clean up the Roesch lots
Where tho buildings were destroyed
by fire recently. He is building a
fence around the site.
The freshmen and sophomores,
chaperoned by J. H. Leonard, en
joyed a party in the grange hall Fri
day. Mr. and Mrs. Lswis Brandt enter

The 22nd annual commencement
exercises were held at the -Lostine
High school auditorium, 'Thursday
evening. May 12.
The tennis tournament that has
been held at Los tl no since the tennis
season opened has been completed
(ixcept for the meeting o Freda Hall,
Velva : Hammack, Bernlce Wining and
Louis Crow, Hugh Mngill and .Bobby
Bright. - .If the tournament cannot

Professor J. H. Williams and his
wife left .Friday, .May 13 for -California
where (they will attend the
University of California during the
summer. They will return lnthe
fall to teach at the Lostine school.

Tho school from Indian creek held
a picnic and swimming party at the
swimming pool Uere early this week.
The eigtjth grade of Cove' school
held Its class party at the gymnasium
a .few evenings ago when the mothers
of all the class members were guests.
Clames were ployed and refreshments
served. Hev. and Mrs. Jackson, who
aro here conducting the Advent serv
ices, were guests. The eighth grade
this year includes 19 boys and girls,
as follows: Velma Richnrdspn, Merrll
Richardson, Velma Richards, Chea
ter Williams, Phyllis Hancock, Lona

The eighth grade examinations were
held My 12 and 13. As both the
Roventh and eighth grades are In
the same room, the seventh graders
had a two-day holiday.
The Eastern Star held .another
quilting party at the homo of Mrs.
B. W. Peterman Wednesday. They
ore making n gift quilt with tho
names of the officers of the differ
ent Eastern Star lodges in Oregon
embroidered in It. The officers of
tho various lodges each pay a srrtill
sum for the privilege of having their
names in the quilt. It has been by
this means that the lodges over Oro
gpr h&ve been able to help the Covo
lodge recuperate after tho fire ,loss
sustained ,0 little more than a year
ago. At the completion of the quilt
It will be given to a Masonic homo.
J. E. Rundell and sons arc build
ing a cabin in. the Ascension school
grounds. The cabin is to be for tho
use of the faculty at the annual
summer, school and Is the sixth one
to be erected. There is one for tho
use of Bishop and Mrs. W. P. Rem
ington, and four for the use of the
