HOOVER'S SHOWISO
S California gave President Hoover a
handsome complimentary vote at
Tuesday's election. The president re-
celred considerably more votes than
the combined tally of all three of .
the Democratic candidates. The rec
ord reveals the strength of the presi-
dent In his home state and indicates
that he will easily carry it against'
any Democratic candidate this fall. j
Another straw In the rad was
Hoover's decisive defeat last week of;
Maryland's favorite son. ex-Senator j
Joseph L Prance. Prance stands well
in his home state and his friends
made an active campaign in his be-
half. It is customary and almost tra-j
dltlonal throughout the states that
the "favorite son" candidate be given s
the compliment of control of the:
state's delegates st the convention.!
But Maryland Republicans disregard-J
ed the custom and paid a high trlb-
ute to the president by instructing '
the state's delegates for him. j
This same fellow. Joseph I. Prance. J
of Maryland, has Hied for the presi-;
dential nomination in Oregon. His
name will be the only one for that .
office on the Republican ticket in
this state. Owing to the fact that
Hoover is practically assured of his
party's nomination his managers are
saving the expense of campaigns in
those states which do not bind their
delegates to the results of the pri
mary. Therefore Hoover's name will
not be printed on the Republican pri

the present system. La Grande in fact most of Eastern
Oregon is so situated geographically that without day
light saving time a large amount of daylight is wasted dur
ing four or five months of the year.
