URBAN A. 111. VP) Have you no
ticed the Northern Crown and the
Northern Cross In the eastern sky in
the early evening? The "butterfly"
of Hercules can be Been also, and the
V-shaped head of the Dragon.
These famous starry configurations
are as easy to find as the Great Dip
per. After dark on some clear evening
in June when the -moon is not too
bright, look toward the east.
Almost overhead there is a semi
circle of stars. The separate stars
are not extremely bright, but the
figure that they form atracts the at
tention. It is Corona, the Northern
Crown.
Vega is the brightest star In the
eastern sky at this season; It Is
slightly north of east and well up
above the horizon.
"Butterfly" of Hercules
Halfway from the half circle of
Corona toward this star is the "but
terfly" of Hercules. It is not diffi
cult to imagine here In the , sky a
butterfly with outstretched wings.
With the telescope directed toward
this constellation the observer can
view Its mbst Interesting feature,
the great cluster In Hercules.; .
It is a ball of tens and probably
hundreds of thousands of suns at
the distance of 34,000 light years,
among the nearest of the globular
clusters which .inhabit the outskirts
of the great system of the Milky
Way. The eye alone sees little or
nothing of this cluster.

placed beside this star It would be
only faintly visible to the , naked
eye.
Show-piece or Summer
The constelatlon Lyra contains
Vega and the stars around It.
Its ring nebula, quite Invisible to
the eye alone, appears In the tele
scope somewhat like a luminous
doughnut; it is one of the showpieces
of the summer skies which is often
exhibited to the visitor at the ob
servatory during this season.
Lyra stands about midway between
Hercules and Cygnus, whose . most
prominent starry configuration Is
the familiar Northern Cross. The
cross Is rising In the northeast at
nightfall on the first of June, its
long axis horizontal.
These are among the summer con
stellations which will be visible
throughout this season. With these
for a beginning and a simple star
map it Is easy to recognize the others.
Aqullla, with its bright star Altalr,
is found rising directly In the east
as the sky grows dark. In the south
east Scorpio Is coming Into view with
its bright red star Antares.
In Western Skies ' '
The planet Jupiter, In the con
stellation Gemini, is the brightest
object m tne western sky in June.
I Mors is farther east. In Leo. Sat
1 urn, in Sagittarius, rises in the
j southeast before midnight.
I Venus is a morning star, rising Irr
the northeast an hour and a half be
fore the sun.

Baked Ham ' Spinach Souffle

Fruit Salad Mayonnaise
Lemon Cream Pudding Coffee

8 pound ham.
Cold water.
4 bay leaves.
6 whole cloves.
2 slices onion.
4 celery leaves.
Scrub ham with stiff brush. Cover
by four Inches with, cold water. Add
rest of ingredients and cover. Cook
slowly for five hourB or until ham is
very tender when tested with fork.
Removo and when cool enough to
handle remove skin and excess fat.
i Fit the ham Into baking pan. and
cover witn sugar mixturo.
Sugar Mixturo
18 whole cloves.
2-3 cup dark brown sugar.
1 teaspoon mustard.
4 tablespoons vinegar.
8tick cloves into warm ham. Pat
sugar over top and sprlnklo with
mustard. Pour vinegar over top and
add Yi inch of ham stock (water in
which ham was cooked). Bake for
30 minutes In moderato oven. Baste
frequently.
Spinach Souffle
3 cups cooked spinach.
2 tablespoons butter.
. teaspoon salt.
1 teaspoon finely chopped onions.
teaspoon paprika.
2 tablespoons lemon Juico.
1 egg yolk.
2 egg whites, beaten.
Mix Ingredients. Pour into but
tered baking dish and bake for 20
minutes in moderate oven. Serve in
dish In which baked. .
Fruit Salad Mayonnaise
1 package lemon flavored gelatin
mixturo.
1 cup boiling fruit Juices.
cup stiff mayonnaise.
1 oup diced peaches.
1 cup diced canned pineapple.
cup diced pears.
Pour boiling fruit Jivlcos ovor gel
atin mixturo and stir until gelatin
has dissolved. Cool and allow to
thicken a little. Beat until frothy
nnd beat In rest of ingredients Pour
Into mold which lias boon rinsed out
, with cold water. Set in cold place
to stiffen. Unmold and serve on let

on top or sauui, if desired.
