SENATOR LEWIS POSITION
An interesting' comment was recently made, by Senator
James Hamilton Lewis of Illinois, to the effect that "Toe
country has grown impatient with the obstruction of the
Republican party leaders against their own President." Mr.
Lewis further says "the great heart of democratic humanity
rebels against the President of the United States being con
tinually assailed and held up before the world as lacking in
intelligence and wanting in integrity of conduct." ' '
This is particularly interesting because Mr. Lewis is a
Democrat, but that fact semingly does not prevent him from
taking a stand that is worthy of emulation by some senators
we know. There is no doubt that the Illinois Senator is a
wise politician, and that he sees the necessity for the Demo
cratic party to have a constructive policy of its own.
His next statement is, "while I stand as a Democrat I
decline to be a partisan with the limitations which would
prevent me from extending equality and justice to Republi
cans as fellow-citizena. And it i3 his purpose to extend
courtesy and co-operation to President Hoover 'as the leader
of his fellow-citizens.
In concluding his remarks he says it is his belief that de
feat will be administered to the "set of men, Republican or
Democrat, who will not recognize that the office of President
is the people's office and is to be treated with dignity."
That an attitude of this kind adopted by all of the nation's
