and undetermined property damage
wus done last night and today when
the usually placid Johnson creek
svept from its banks in the suburban
Lents district and raged through
southeast Portland Into Sell wood.
Police, firemen and volunteers
waded through the water and man
ned boats to remove men, women,
children and property. Police took
two elderly women from a marooned
shack where the water stood waist
deep.
A young man, unidentified, was
blamed for the flood. Hoping to
drain the district of the low standing
water in the creek, he cut a levee,
with the result he was obliged to run
for his life to avoid the bulky de
bris. The resulting flood was described
as the worst in ten years.
A man and his wife, attired in
bathing suits, were seen busily en
gaged in carrying their household
goods from the wattery first floor
story of their home. They had dif
ficulty In crossing the flood to dry
land several hundred feet away.
No accident .were reported.
