Thompson, swimming fctar in his
prep school and plebe days, became
eligible for the Naval academy tn

in, he set a new Intercollegiate dash
record, broke two navy records and
established himself, in the opinion
of many, as the greatest tank star

A week after the opening meet
with Columbia, Thompson continued
bis meteoric career by- defeating
George Kojac, of Rutgers, marking
the latter's first defeat In eastern in
tercollegiate competition.
Naval academy authorities already
are talking of the sensational young
ster as a potential Olympic repre
sentative in 1932.
Thompson topped the large field
of eastern college swimmers at the ,
conclusion ol the Rutgers meet.
with a total of 56 points, having
scored 10 first places and chalked
up six point in relay races. He
was undefeated. His nearest rival,
Lloyd Martin, a team mate, was 11
points behind him. -
The young natator is 19 years old
and weighs 182 pounds, which Is 20
more than he weighed when he
starred at the Polytechnic Institute
at Baltimore. He is six feet one
and three-quarter inches tall, in his
bare feet. .
- In 1929 at Poly he captured the
University of Pennsylvania inter
scholastic 50-yard championship,
probably his greatest school boy
achievement.
Thompson set new national and
Intercollegiate records for the 50
yard, free style, at 23.1 seconds,
when he defeated Kojac. In addi
tion he set a new record for the
Navy for the 100-yard freo style,
cutting the time to 53.2 seconds,
only four-tenths of a second behind
the collegiate mark.
