Basketball" took as a working hosts
for research work Into the problem,
high school boys competing In a
tournament held at the university.
Every boy competing In the tourna
ment underwont a thorough physical
examination. After the fourth cham
pionship game tests showed that the
members of tho Wichita High school
team,' the - winners of the state
tournament, and later winners of the
national championship at. Chicago,
were In better physical condition
than at any time during the tourna
ment, or the members of the two teams
that played for tho championship the
test of but one man gave any indica
tion that previous opinions that bas
ketball was too severe on me ncaru
and kidneys of normal high -school
bova mlirht be sound.
Basketball seems strenuous to the
spectator because the spectator nat
urally follows the ball, which Is the
locus oi activity, .
However, some years ago, Dr. J.-H.
McCurdv of Springfield college,
Springfield. Mass., conducted a sim
ilar test upon team members at that
college and found that 87 per cent
ot the players showed traces of heart
and kidney strain.
Perhaps the difference In the re
sults of the two tests was due to
the differences in the ages of the
two groups. Tho wear and tear on
the older physical machines was too
severe.
Another Interesting test was made
on four btgh; school teams, which
wero entered in a league tournament.,
to ascertain the actual .number of
minutes the average high school bas
ketball player wua In motion during
an entire game.
A separate watch was kept on each
of the 20 players in the games. When
ever a pluyer stopped, the watch
stopped, and count was resumed
again when the player resumed ac
tivity. The results of the Investigation
ware as follows:
1. Average time elapsed for one
10 minute period of play 13 minutes.
8 seconds.
2. Shortest time of activity for any
one player 3 minutes, 32 seconds.
3. Longest time of activity for
any one player 7 minutes, 31 sec
onds. 4. Avorago tlmo of activity for
each player 5 minutus, 38 seconds.
5. , Percentage of average activity
ot each player to tho entire playing
time 39.8 per cent.
Such studies as these stimulate
further research studies and settle
many moot points of argument.
Mental Stance: It Is possible to
acquire a favorable frame of mind
or a mental stance by the kind of
practice that helps a man to acquire
correct body stance.
It Is good pedagogy to assume that
the very best skill and a consistent
high level of performance cau not
be attained unless the right kind
of mental stance has been acquired.
Investigators are finding thut the
reuctlon time of forwards Is faster
than that of guards. Porhaps we
can go back to primitive man for this
explanation : The pursued must of
necessity have quicker reaction time
than the pursuer.
The visual, auditory and taclle re
actions must bo thoroughly studied

NEWARK, N. J., Feb. 30 W A
split vote of the judges has added
another victory to Ray Conger's long
list ot triumphs and charged Paul
Keller, 800-meter champion of France
with his third straight defeat on
American Indoor tracks.
Conger was awarded the decision
over Keller In a blanket finish in
the special 1000 meters run of the
New Jersey A. A. U- track and field
championships here last night. Three
ot tho finish line judges thought
Conger won while the other two
voted for Keller.
Conger set the pace but Keller,
showing greatly Improved form,
dashed post the speedy Illinois A. C.
middle distance ace a lap and a half
from the finish line and 50 yards
from horns seemed to have the race
tucked away. Conger flashed his
usual closing spurt to pass the
Frenchman by Inches. Spurt fol
lowed spurt and the pair crossed the
finish line virtually on even terms.

onds, fast for the flat, unbanked
track of the Newark armory.

PORTLAND, Ore. (Special) An
even dozen gun clubs had enrolled
In The Oregonlan's sixth annual
telegraphio trapshoot tournament up
to- yesterday. This hearty response to
the first announcement of the tourna
ment made last Sunday is greater
man ior any previous shoot and in
dicates a record entry for the 1031
event.
All of the clubs entered to date
with the exception of one have com
peted in previous shoots sponsored

gon clubs, but also to any organisa
