Investigation revealed the "devil"
appeared one and a half miles north
of here. A farm youth who admitted
a penchant for mimicking tho "sa-
rt tanic spirit" was taken into custody,
s and produced a close-fitting costume,
horns, tall, hoofs and all. No charges
l have been preforred.

throughout the world, ond many
men earn their living through teach

nithology. Besides being the inspir
ation of much pootry and other Uter

Though women no longer adorn
their hats with waving plumes, many
men are today engaged in raising
plume birds in large numbers, for
new purposes constantly increase the
demand for the beautiful plumage.
Domestication of the birds followed
the passage of laws protecting the
wild birds from the dcpradatlous of
plume hunters.
Birds have through the centuries
proved their usefulness by protecting
mankind from the otherwise uncon
trollable spread of noxious weeds, in
sects, rodents' and various other
pests. Most people of this locality
are familiar with the story of how
tho people of the Great Salt Lake
Valley, in pioneer days, were saved
from starvation when great flocks of
gulls swooped down to interrupt the
depredations of a plagxie of locusts.
The English Sparrow was originally
Imported Into the New England states
lor the purposo of exterminating the
ennker worm which was threatening
to destroy tho trees. The sparrows
fulfilled that purpose and then
adapted themselves to a diet of seeds

Birds perform a valuable service in

for Nature. The ocean beaches ond
river banks would be unpleasantly
odiferous were it not for tho gulls
that eat the refuse which Is washed
up on the shores. Vultures keep des
ert regions clean, while the crows
and magpies function In non-desert
regions. The birds locate the refuse
tnrougu their acute vision, ana not
by the sense of smell.
The killing of hawks and other
predacious birds is an unwise meas
ure. The sparrow hawks are those
most ofton killed, and thoy aro the
beet controllers of grasshoppers and
rodents. In 1885 Pennsylvania placed
a bounty on predacious birds and
certain mammale. In a year and a
half the state paid out $00,000 in
bounties. But it was shown by au
thorities that the killing of the
hawks saved not more than 92,000
worth of chickens, while if they had
been allowed to live they would have
saved $4,000,000 worth of crops from
destruction by field mice. So the
bounty law was repealed. Bounties
on birds have always dono more
harm than good, for birds ore the
farmers' friends. It is estimated that
in Iowa alone tree sparrows eat 876
tons of seeds which, If allowed to
grow, would cause the farmer end
loss expense In overcoming weeds.

Birds are used as food by most
peoples, the chicken, duck, goose and
turkey being most common in the
United States, but in some countries
birds are used to secure other food.
Fish eating birds aro raised by men
who fasten rings around their throats
and toko them out onto bays; they
catch llvo fish which are taken from
them by their masters, and as a re
ward tho birds aro allowed to cat
every fifth or sixth fiah caught. In
some lands falcons ore still used for
hunting.

killed today, it would be a matter of

higher life would cense. .
