summary of weather and crop condi
tions in Oregon for the week ending
August 19 waa Issued today by the
.United States department of agri
culture, weather bureau. It said:
. Scattered showers, heavy In some
instances, fell over the central and
eastern sections and In some parts of
the southern counties. Water for
irrigation is very low and Is practic
ally exhausted In some of the south
ern orchard districts. In the central
-portion of the state streams and
water holes are lower than they have
been In many years. -
' Cereals: Wheat harvest continued
with little Interruption during the
week; in the southern and north cen
tral counties harvesting should be
completed during the coming week
but In some of the higher plateau
counties spring wheat Is. Just ripen-,
ing. Yields are better than expect
ed earlier in tho season. Lack of rain
over the western section Is checking
the growth and development of corn.
' Fruits: A large crop of Bartlett
pearc bas ripened about ten days
earlier than the average season and
is being picked in the southern and
western counties under favorable
weather conditions. A heavy drop of
pears Is reported from some of the
'Willamette valley orchards, in the
southern orchards a shortage of irri
gation water Is causing some damage
to trees. A short crop of evergreen
( blackberries is ripening in the west.
t Meadows, pastures, and ranges: A
fair supply of feed is available on
mountain ranges and some improve
ment is reported on the lower ranges
and. valley pastures where showers
fell' during the week. Streams and
water boles on the ranges are .very
low or dry 4n most sections and It has
.been necessary to move stock long
(distances for watering In some places.
i Livestock: Range cattle, in general,
arc reported In good condition where
ranges are not overstocked: sheep,
however, are not faring so well on the
eastern ranges. Short pasturage con
tinues to have an adverse effect on
dairy herds. ...
