Make Wide Velvet
Hats Popular
By Diana Menvln
(Associated Press Fashion Editor)
PARIS (P Brimmed hats of vel
vet are to be this winter's most
fashionable folly It seems.
'.During the recent mannequin
manifestations at 1 the races and
smart gatherings velvet hats were
tho outstanding style change.
The mannequins wore wide brim
med velvet hats in . rich colors many
shades deeper than their cool sum
mer dresses. .
There were hats of plum, turquoise
and rich dark greens - .
Big black hats of velvet were not
confined to mannequins for some
of society's notably . well-dressed
women wore brimmed hats of black
velvet with white costumes.
,,v Black velvet hats with white or
gandy costumes were a big success
at tho race courses. A variation of
tho theme was hats with black vel
vet crowns and wide white organdy
brims. .
i But . the favorite hat of velvet Is
not to have a flat brim apparently.
The most admired advance autumn
millinery models are those with skil
fully shirred wide brims.
Many of these hats are wide at the
sides and front and have short backs
which show interesting arrangements
of shirring. ,.
Brims, whether large or small, are
lifted high off the face in front. Fre
quently brims are mounted several
Inches above the edge of the crown
in bandeau effect.
