r- Onco more the tennis musketeers of
France, have beaten oil America'

Capturing both of the final singles
matches yesterday. Franco retained
the cup by a margin of four victories
to one and left no doubt of the su
periority of the French acea. Henri
Cochet, and Jean Borotra. over the
best America can offer In a tennis
way at the present time.
Borotra. the "bounding Basque" of

Tilden Make l.one Point
Thus the m:i ended with Tilden
chalking up the only American point
by beating Borotra In singles on
Friday. Lott lost both his singles
matcher- and Wilmer Allison and
John Van Ryn. Wimbledon cham
pions, lost the doubles to Cochet and
Jacques Brugnon.
France had been strongly favored
to retain the cup. especially alter the
defeat of Van Ryn and Allison in
doubles, but America had been fig
ured to put up a much closer fight
for the trophy tt lost In 1037. A
year ago France won by a margin
of only three to two and most ex
perts expected a similar score this
year. ,
Cochet. showing a remarkable re
versal of form after his poor per
formance a: Wimbledon, dominated
the challenge round, as he has for
several years, once he solved Til
den's game yesterday, he gave Big
Bill as bad a trouncing as the Phil
adelphian ever has taken. Lott put
up a gallant fight against Borotra
but the veteran Frenchman called,
upon his experience in tournament
play when pressed and managed to
hold the upper hand.
For Tilden and Borotra. the series
1 marked the end of their Davis cup
careers. Big Bill was pressed into
j service this year .against his own de
' sires and announced he would never
play for the International trophy
aain. Borotra also told the Asso
I elated Press he was through with
cup play.
