Defends Expense
In Primary Race

na . McCormick, eptomized her de
fense of the expenditure of more
than $250,000 to win a, .senatorial
nomination Monday with, the state
ment: "It may be possible to buy certain
elections in this country but you
cannot buy Illinois landslides."
In the 7000 word statement with
which she opened the hearing before
the senate campaign funds commit
tee, the republican senatorial nom
inee added (65,214.10 to the $252,
&72.30 she had previously admitted
vas spent in her behalf. But the
tirst quarter million was her own
jooney, she asserted, and the addi
tional sum was expended for her
cause by three friendly organizations.
Mrs. McCormick's statement criti
cized Senator Gerald P. Nye, chair
J man of the special campaign funds ;
committee, lor asserting his Inves
tigation had found she had spent ap
proximately 9325,000 instead of $252,
500 she had reported.
The republican senatorial nominee
suid Senator Nye's statement was in
accurate and misleading, based on
the fact that she voluntarily had
submitted a supplemental report set
ting forth the spending of the $07,

1 cup cherry Juice
2 cups grape Juice
1 cup orange Juice
2-3 cup lemon juice
8 cups iced water

fill greased muffin pans; bake 15
minutes in moderately hot oven.
Cool and frost.
Cocoa nut Frosting
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
2 egy whites
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-3 cup cocoanut
Mix sugar and water. Boil, with
out stirring, until a fine thfad forms
when a portion is slowly p' .ired from
a spoon. Pour slowly Into beaten
egfe" whites. Beat until creamy and
cold. Add vanilla. Cover tops of
cakes. -with frosting. Sprinkle with
cocoanut. '

G cups sliced peeled peaches
2 cups diced rhubarb
1 cup raisins
1-3 cup lemon juice
1 cup orange Juice
5 cups sugar
Mix ingredients and let stand 30
minutes. Cook .very slowly 45 minutes-

sterilized jars. When cool seal.
