Three Eastern
Clubs Remain In
American Race
Ily Hugh . Fullerton Jr.
(Associated Press Sports Writer)
Three eastern clubs are about all
that are left in the American league
pennant race, but the four western
members are putting on a struggle
of their own that Is close en ugh to
stir up some interest. Cleveland,
holding fourth place by a diminish
ing margin over Detroit. Is having a
great rivalry with the Tigers while
Chicago and St. Louis are staging an
equally close struggle for sixth place.
The Indians went one up on their
nearest rivals yesterday with eight
victories against seven for Detroit by
winning yesterday's opening game on
on abbreviated series 6 to 5.
St, Louts again moved ahead ot
Chicago's White Sox. taking sixth
place by a half game margin and
gaining a 7-6 margin In the games
played between the two clubs by win- i
ning a ten inning game 7 to 6. The
Insertion of Ted Gulllc into the line-
up turned the tide in favor of the ;
Browns. As a pinch hitter he singled
to brtnff fn th tvlMp rim In th I
eighth and In the tenth he hit a
home run to win the game. j
Senators Star Ahead I
Among the leaders, Washington
and Philadelphia continued on even i
terms, tne senators leading by a half
game margin. Washington recover
ed rapidly from the break in Its win
ning streak by taking the final en
counter from the Boston Red Sox
7 to 3. as Ossie Bluege drove In four
runs with two doubles and a home
run, George Earnahaw pitched the
Athletics to an easy triumph over the
New York Yankees, allowing only
three hits for a 9 to 1 triumph.
Two of the Yankee hits were made In
the final Inning.
The National league had but one
game on Its schedule yesterday and
there waa some doubt as to whether
it was baseball that New York and
Philadelphia played. The Giants won
by a score of 19 to 8, hardly an ord
inary baseball result, and some of
the fielding looked far out of place
on a maor league diamond. The
New Yorkers had their biccest hlttine
fpree in the third Inning when they
