by her grandmother for her spe
cial love and attention. The others

her darling.
Sho showered the child with
giftt: and treats. She would take
her to spend days at her house
and there spoil her with every
adoring attention.
Vhatevor Nancy did was won
derful, whatever sho said remark
able. Then when Nancy was nine,
grandmother died. Her parents ex
pected that the child would feel
tho bereavement keenly. They
wero not prepared for the calm
ness with which she took the
event.
Nancy, apparently, had cared
little for the grandmother who had
loved her so much. Sho laughed
and played as usual on the day of
the funeral.
Gradually, however, a change
crept over her behavior. She mop
ed and when they tried to talk
to her, Bho would only answer,
"I wish there wero someone hero
to lovo mo like grandmother did
or grandmother was nico to
inc. Nobody is nice to mo now.'
Her attitude grow worse. Noth
ing in tho course of tho day to
day lifo of that affectionate whole
some family seemed capable of
drawing her away from her pre
occupation.
Finally they sent her away to
the country where a change of
scene, now. interests, new play
mates, restored a healthy satisfac
tion to her day to day life.
A child who Is permitted to be
come dependent upon an excessive
indulgent love, upon approval and
attention, based not upon merits,
but upon the need of the person
who showers them upon him. has
always difficult adjustments to
mako when, for one reason or an
other, theso are suddenly with
drawn.
It Is a danger from which tho
thoughtful parent will try to guard
his child.
