Dr. Frank Lavlore, of Chlcuso,
was overcome by smoko ami lust
night James Jones, a negro order
ly, who was credited- by hospital
authorities with assisting in the
removal of 20 patients, collapsed.
His condition was described as
serious.
Flames, punctuated by two ex
plosions, wero confined to a. single
room used for X-ruy wokr.
Tho 260 negro patients in adja
cent wards wero removed on
stretchers. They suffered only
from shock.
Dr. Kric l.indrcth, who was
working In tho X-ray room when
tho flro started, said his attention
was attracted by fumes and he
turned to sco smoke coming from
an open box of film. Ho said ho
threw buckets of water on the
flames and used a fire extinguish
cr without success.
Two policemen wero knocked
down by force of one of tho explo
sions. Hospital officials said a large
amount of X-ruy equipment was
destroyed but that properly , dam
ago was slight.

visit Sunday. Mrs. Baxter accom
panied her husband on his return
