It is an unfortunate and an ungrateful thoughtlessness
perhaps, but it can be excused because not one man in a hun
dred who served in any war gave serious thought at the time
, to what it was all about or to why his service was deserving i
of commendation. Did any of them actually go into the fight !

We never heard of any. Did any of them enlist with the)
r high purpose of destroying a program of militarism? Yerv,
very few.
The men to whom Memorial Day is dedicated gave
attention to ideals, had little time for chatter 1
tism. They, went into service because they had instinctive
pride in being Americans, because they saw a national job
that had toy done, because they were young and sensed
