the clothing and hurned the lis.
Twenty-two thousand nine hundred seven persons during
the past year were fined or punished in Ilelsinfffors, capital
city 'of Finland, for trespassing upon the prohibition law,
according to a news dispatch. Which means that as an
average, every tenth inhabitant was convicted of illegal
consumption of alcohol. The United States, it seems, is not
the only country having difficulty with prohibition laws.
As if bootleg liquor were not enough, this country is now
being treated to bootleg. literature (?) following pubilicity
given certain "improper writings" by the United States
senate. D. II. Lawrence's "Lady Chatterly's Lover" has ap
peared in this country from England without suffering from
a diluting process as in the case of liquor and a Spokane
circulating library rented it with great rapidity at 50c a
day until authorities stepped, in and confiscated the book.
Somehow or other we can't be worried about the bad effect
of these so-called bad books. If they are terribly bad, nice
people will not be able to understand them; and those who
can understand them must be fairly well versed in vulgarity
already. Innocence and purity may well be protected but
the issuance of a strict order, "Don't read that!", is a poor!
way to accomplish protection.
UTILIZING JUNKED CAIIS
Every section of the country cursed with unsightly "auto

for rejoicing in the report that tho Ford Motor company has
a plan for buying up discarded automobiles to melt down
their metal parts for reclamation in its steel plants.
' Such conversion of material offers a partial solution of
the , problem created by the ever-growing piles of broken
motor cars and trucks. In time, with efficient methods, the
reclaimers may be able to pay enough for outmoded automo
biles to clear the roads of machines so antiquated as to be
menaces to traffic, and to clear the roadsides of seai-s caused
by the location of "graveyards" within sight of main high-
ways. Today such machines have a junk value only for their
nonferrous metais aluminum, copper and brass.
When rubber prices soared a few yeais ago a similar pro-
gram of reclamation was instituted for the rubber in old
tires, which, when mixed with fresh gum rubber, was molded
into new tires of fair quality. Reclaimed rubber still is in
demand, particularly for the manufacture of hard rubber
products, and the heaps of worn automobile tires that once
littered the landscape have disappeared. A similar fate for
old automobiles would bo a scenic as well as an economic
blessing.
Automobile manufacturers and dealers look . forward to
that time when an automobile after two-years' operation will
be worth more as junk than'as a vehicle of transportation.
When and if it is realized, perpetual motion will be estab
lished in the motor industry.
CONTROLLING THE SUPPLY
A cooperative marketing association is to agriculture what
a corporation is to business. It is the opinion of some busi
ness men that cooperative associations are founded on the
fallacious assumption that they can set aside the laws of
supply and demand. They entertain no such silly ideas.
There is no farmer who. has given serious thought to the
development of a better marketing system who does not
realize that the price of a product necessarily depends largely
upon the demand for it and the supply with which to meet
that demand is taken into consideration the price is affected
largely by the time, the manner and the place of tho feeding
of the supply to the demand. In other words, the supply
must be fed to the demand in an orderly way and in such
quantities as the demand can consume ut a fair price.
Provided the supply is kept under rigorous control, as it
is in industry, there is nothing to lose nnd everything to gain
by impounding surplus production to be fed out according
to the demand.
So the big problem before the federal farm board is keep
ing the supply under control. Raising the general level
pf farm prices will provide an almost irresistible temptation
to increase acreage where arable soil and labor are available.
