Jn favor of the road are the federal bureau of public ixwtds
and the road authorities in Washington. They arjfue that
it will provide a nw)e direct, non-ferry route between Port
land and Spokane, will eliminate the extra distance now
quired by the route through Pendleton. To build it would

and establishing more direct routes between laiyo centers.
The truth of the nvtlter, however, is that the shorter
route to Spokane is a shield for the real purpose to (five a
new and more direct route U) Walla Walla. The shoil road
to Spokane is already available by means of a ferry" and the
Spokane-Pasco state highway which iB many miles shorter
than via Walla Walla.
Motorists, of course, object to ferries and crossing the
river is therefore a stumblingblock. iiut the ferry will not
always be a bother. If the government approves the Umatilla
ntplds project as can be reasonably anticipated Within the
next three or four years, a bridge across the Columbia at
this point will bi; built and solve the road problem immediate
ly. It would, as a matter of fact, make the Wallula cut-off
obsolete and the expenditure of funds for this route a total
waste.
The more direct route, as everyone agrees, is necessary,
lint to build it leading into Walla Walla at this time would
nut be good economy. Oregon hits other uses for her highway
funds, particularly since the cut-off is not a part of the ori
ginal highway system and its addition would be contrary
to the excellent and well-established policy of the state high
way commission.
Only one thing, we Imagine, could cailsc the commission to
spend money for this road to Walla Walla pressure from
the federal bureau of roads in the form of federal aid on the
condition that Oregon build her share of this highway. And
we cannot believe that federal authorities would be so short
sighted. The road is not an absolute necessity, would not
be It peimanont Spokane route. And Oregon should oppose
any expenditure for such a purpose until other more pressing
highway needs can bo met with the funds at hand.
