i AUTOMOBILE SHOWS
i.
. Automobile shows are here again. They ought to dispel
for all time the remark once commonly heard, "They can't
improve cars much from now on." '
Automobiles have been improved in appearance and as
to works. They will continue to exhibit improvements from
year to year, but the 1930 improvements will prove unusually
irresistible to the automobile-conscious.
Perhaps it is commonplace to keep on repeating year after
year that these shows have more than a passing interest
for even the average persons. The automotive industry is
among the leaders in the United States. There are approxi
mately 25,000,000 cars in operation. Each of these cars is
certain to have an interest for at least four other persons,
so that at the outset of the calculation more than three
fourths of the country's people are interested in automobiles.
As a matter of fact this is lower than the actual number.
Under such conditions it is not surprising that the public
should be interested in motor cars and the changes and pro
gress they make. It is a matter of educational convenience
,to find so many cats grouped for display as are shown at
the auto expositions.

CAKBON MONOXIDE MKNAC'H
Tho federal public health service has issued another warn
ing against the carbon monoxide peril, which grows year by
year as the output of automobiles increases. Carbon mon
oxide is an odorless lethal gas that is given off in largo
quantities by the exhaust. of motors.
The survey of the health service explodes the theory that
the streets are becoming dangerous because of tho clouds of
smoke that arise from motors on congested thoroughfares,
but solemn warning is given concerning roofed structures
used to house automobiles. Garages, repair stations and
parking sheds are the places of danger.
, Fresh air dispels the peril of carbon nuinoxide. Samples
of air taken at principal street corners in 11 large cities were
found to be virtually pure, and certainly not dangerous. .The
fresh air "cure" should be given garages frequently every
clay, if possible and under no circumstances should a motor
ist sit in a closed car, in a closed garage, and start the motor.
Carbon monoxide kills quickly and without any previous
warning.
