MARKET NEWS OF THE DAY
i A Washington mini Icavus $200 to his dojr. An iinnccos
suiy wiislu of money. All he needed to do was find some
dog-less small loy and be assured that the animpl would
have love, care and attention far in excess of what two
hundml dollai's will buy. 1
Flunk Jenkins, Eugene publisher, drove the 40 miles be
tween Mitchell and Dayvillu on his recent trip to La Grande,
lie commented on the way Oregon citizens save money. by
spending it to see thai such stretches are eliminated. We
think that all radicals who oppose anything above u $3
license fee would receive n liberal education in highway values
if they drove over that particular stretch.
Announcement that officials of a middle-western univer
sity town had to take special precautions to make sure that
reckless aviators would not try any aerial stunts over a
packed stadium during a recent football game indicates that
we are going to have idiotic flyers to cope with, just us we
have had idiotic nutombbile drivel's. No flyer in his senses
would stunt over a stadium jammed with people; and, up to
this lime, most of us have, taken it for granted that all. avia
tors had good sense. l!ut apparently some of them have not.
(Jt is rather disquieting to think about, loo. A lunatic in an
airplane could cause an awful lot of damage. -

' A SMAI.L-SOULKD ACT
It is extremely disheartening to realize that Architect
Whitpey Warren, who designed the rebuilt library for the
University of Louvian, has won his fight to have the in
scription, "Destroyed by German fury restored by Ameri
can generosity," chiseled over the entrance.
Mr. Warren, riding n very high horse, insists tliav the
architect has a right to see his designs put into execution
regardless of the wishes of those who are paying for the
building, lie has talked a great deal.' about the privileges
of an artist, and has intimated that those who oppose him
are crass souls to whom the fundamentals of art aix a closed
book.
' However, it is very hard not to feel that Mr. Warren has
made considerable of a spectacle of himself. Over ami above
all his fine phrases about ai t and creative work there stands
tho great fact that his inscription will help to keep alive old
hatreds that ought to be allowed to die.
The world has already outgrown a good deal of its war
time hysteria. We know a good deal that we did not know
n dozen years ago. We know, for instance, that the German
army was not a collection of incarnate fiends, as we used to
think; we know that many of the crimes which we laid to
German baseness were simply the inevitable accompaniment
of war.
So we have let our oltl hativds cool off. It is good, for the
peace of the world, that we should do so. To ketp them
alive means to invite a reptition of what happened in 101 1.
Thus Air. Warren's inscription is extremely unfortunate.
Against the wishes of those who contributed ihe money to
restore this building, u, has made it perpetuate an outworn
discord. His insistence on the "rights of an artist" has been
very selfish and very, very small-souled.
