BAKER'S I'AI'BR OBJECTS
Baker Democrat-Herald "While I do not .wish to charge
the board with wrongdoing 1 feel confident that two members
knew they were going to 'soak' Baker before the hearing
began. The unfairness of the rulings speak for themselves.
No comment is needed. That the board worded its decision
so as to give a public impression thnt Baker had been con
victed of all charges, yet lacked the courage to declare the
contested men ineligible convinces me that they knew in their
hearts that the players were eligible on the grounds con
tested and purposely left the matter ambiguous so as to have
a hole to crawl into if their decree was contested in the
courts. That Baker innocently played either one or two men
in the Prairie City and Nyssa games whose eligibility was
later questioned by alleged failure to make certain credits in
Corvallis and Salem respectively, gives the board a chance
later to say that this was what it penalized Baker for if that
becomes desirable. This violation if it occurred was purely
technical and involved no wrongful intent.' This was recog
nized by everyone at the hearing as the record will show.
In the meantime the impression goes out that Baker was
convicted of a far more serious offense.
"What are wo to do about it? I nave no recommendation
to make. It will depend on the attitude of the people, which
seems to be 'plenty hot.' The fact that we have been wronged
does not necessarily give us a right of appeal to the courts,
but there are probably three of four points from which such
h fighlBould bo launched if the community wants to do it.
Tho fact that we have been wronged and have a legal
remedy does not mean that we necessarily ouirht to avail
ourselves of it. That will depend upon the attitude of various
interests, parents and guardians of the lwys, the school
board, business and civic groups and individual citizens. That
is for then! to determine. My job is to give the people the
facts they are entitled to have before they do anything.
"In the meantime La Grande has won her fight. The
Baker football learn, which perhaps could not have been de
feated on the gridiron, has been put out of business by
order of an athletic committee. Regardless of what is done
we will in all probability be unable to play any schools that
are members of the stale association this year. We are out
of the Eastern Oregon championship race! It is customary
for the losers to extend congratulations to the winner of a
hard (ought battle, and on behalf of the people of Baker The
Democrat-Herald felicitates our neighbor city on her victory
We trust it will be worth to her what it has cost and will
cost.
