Many tlvjusands of men and women are watching with al
ternating sensations of elation and depression the world series
baseball "games. At loud speakers throughout the country
many more thousands are listening intently while the crack
of the bat against a faHt one, the spearing of a liner, the flash
of a ruiffier stealing feciind, arc "described 'in thrilling words.
Onco a year America forgets business and its lesser recreatr
tions to watch or to hear the enthralling progress of the
world series. In each city there are more persons clamoring
dor admission to the games than the stands can contain. Such
is the appeal of baseball.
Tourist travel over state highways during the season just
closing has been greater than ever before. Contrary to the
opinion of those who looked upon the John Day highway as
a competitor, the Old Oregon Trail carried more cars in 1928
than in 1927 and shows another gain this year. The more
routes, tho more attractive the state is to tourists and the
greater volume everyone enjoys. Incidentally, a far better
class of motorists was noted this year, according to La Grande
filling station operators. Less of the tramp, more of the
traveler. Which means more business of a worth while va
lioty. ,
