Brings Hope to Ameri
can Wheat Growers.
Hy Frank I. Weller
(Associated Press Kami Kdltor)
WASHINGTON AI') lr. J. H.
Grisdule .deputy minister of the
Canadian department of agricul
ture, is quoted in Ottama as an
nouncing1 the development of
wheats which can resist rust.
Seed will not be available In
large quuntnties for two or three
years, but it is expected that even
tually the new wheat will save Ca
nadian farmers millions of dol
lars every year.
The announcement Is of deep in
terest to wheat specialists in tho
United States, where black stum
rust causes probably greater loss
tb the spring wheat crop than alt
other diseases combined.
The federal plant-disease survey
estimates that stem rust has caus
ed losses of spring and winter
wheat during recent years ranging
from GG5.HO0 bushels in Mil 8 to
about 1 So.iHiojHHi in MMti. with an
average annual loss of nearly 3S(
- ucHMHHi bushels in tho l'A north
1T central states.
Kf forts to 'halt the tremendous
destruction include eradication of
Ltlic common barberry, host plant
of black stem rust; tho Arrowing- ot
rust-resistant varieties, and the use
or Improved methods or field cul
ture. Production of varieties resistant
to rust is a complex problem, since
the disease consists of many bio
logic forms which differ In their
pathogenicity for certain varieties
of wheat.
That cxplains-why tfte. same var
iety may be resisiunt when grown
In one locality and susceptible i
when grown In another, or why a
variety may be resistant In the
same locality in one- year and bus-
ceptible In tho next.
It is obvious, plant pathologists
nay, that if wheat is to be resistant
in tho field It must be resistant
to all biologic forms present In tho
lociility In which it is to bo grown.
Whether the Canadians have ac
complished this feat remains to bo
determined. Until that time therr
Js a question whether the wheat,
although resistant in Canada's
spring wheat provinces, would be
resistant In the United States.
Tho United States department of
(agriculture has had varied success
in developing resistance In ..pure
strains and In crosses but has" been
unable to find a wheat uniformly
resistant In all regions In all sea
sons. Twenty-one biologic forms of
rust have been found In the tip-

that never vary. That's why cheap coffee-making and fine
coffee-making do not belong together - - for nothing is so contagious
