MILLIONS IN GAS TAXKS
The extent to which the automobile, the truck and the
tractor have conquered the United States -is graphically
shown in reports on gasoline tax collections, now being made
in every state.
Publication of these figures and the uses to which the
money is put renders a public service, inasmuch as it tends
to reconcile motorists and others concerned to a lax under
which they are sometimes inclined to chafe, for it shows
that the great bulk of the fund so realized lias been spent to
insure their safety, their comfort and their convenience.
Kvery one who pays a lax on his purchase of gasoline
must experience a feeling of satisfaction in the thought
that he is contributing his own individual share, be it much j
or little, to the construction and repair of a network of;
good roads, especially as sin'h roads are a necessity to the1
traffic which modem methods of locomotion and transport;!-1
lion have brought in their wake. j
The air may yet beat out both the road and the ocean as
a highway for pleasure travel and commercial transporta-!
