. When Picture Men
Violate His Rule
BOSTON. (AP) A word pic
ture of Calvin Coolidge in anger
us he ordered a news reel camera
man from a New York office sur
prised newspaper readers of tlio
nation recently. , ., . '
While the average citizen may
liave wondered at the sudden 'stir
ring of the former. President who
lias been, as a rule, a model of
even temper and patience before
the camera, veteran news photo
graphers appreciated Mr. . Cool
Uige'a indignation. .'
The motion picture photogra
pher whom Mr, Coolidge disci
plined had violated an unwritten
rule of long standing that Calvin
Coolidge must not be photograpU
ed having his picture madu, .
' Sometimes : a: distant shot of
other - camera men at work upon
their subject is the only . oppor
tunity of a photographer to turn
In a picture that - is "different."
But this is one plcturo that tho
former president has steadfastly
refused to allow. - :
At the beginning , of i his public
career Mr. Coolidge made the rulo
that no picture might bo made of
IxliiX that included even a single
camera leveled at him. Sometimes
a .photographer, throught' 'either
ignorance or design, has : at
tempted its violation, but Mr.
Coolidge or his alert secret service
guurd always routed the.offender.
Boston photographers . recall
such jtn effort by an over-iealous
novice on the occasion of Vice
President Dawes visit at th
Coildge Jiome at Plymouth Notdu
Vt., during the president's first
vacation after his Cleveland nom
ination. ' ... . . , .
It was raining so hard that Mr.
C oolidge and his guest were oblig
ed to stand in the doorway of the
barn for the inevitable picture.
One of tho photographer group
succumbed to the; temptation to
try a silhouette front the roar in
terior of the barn. It would have
been a novel study of the first and
second citizens as they stood be
lore tho cameras. ' ..
But tho president was not to b"e
taken unawares. The slight noise
of unfolding the camera brougnt
the banishment of the photogra
pher. One picture, however shows the
former president in the act of be
ing photographed That is a pic
ture of Mrs. Coolidge .operating
4i small motion - picture camera
with Mr. Coolidge as her subject. '

Cucumbers Made In
Plants In Germany
BKR'ijN (AP)-r Cucumbers as"
by-products of an electric power
plant are causing a sensation here.
The . municipal power station ot
KUngcnberg, which supplies a
largo . part of Greater Hortin's
electric current, has successfully
conducted ah experiment in utiliz
ing the waste steam generated in
tlie power plant by the turbine
engines and with it is heating 12
cucumber hot-houses.,
The results have surpassed ex
pectations. A yield of 100,000 cu
mubei;s was gained from ' 2.60U
plants at a time, when vegetation
was still so far behind thut, all
other cucumbers consumed in
Germany had to be imported from
warmer climates. Tho home prod
uct commanded fully as good
prices as thd foreign importations.
Other cities are watching the
experiment with .interest, nnd it
is not unlikely that vegetable rais
ing hereafter will go hand in
Iiand with electric power gener
ating. The KUngcnberg station al
ready has gone in for tomatoes,
in addition to cucumbprs.
