WCFL, the Chicago Federation of
Labor station and FEB( Super
ior, Wis.; carrying to court their
fights for better assignments, sev
eral controversies between broad -eastern
and the federal radio coin
mission are in litigation.
WCFL, which operates part time,
seeks full time on a cleared chan
nel and WE IK! demands unlimited
time on 12K0 kilocycles. Both ap
plications were denied by the com
mission and appeal was taken to
tho court of appeals of the District
of Columbia.
Awaiting decision in the same
court is tho appeal of WTRL, the
Technical Radio laboratory, Mid-
land Park, N. J., one of several
stations refused renewal of licen- j
ses by the commission last summer
on the grounds they were not serv- j
ing the public interest.
In this court also is tho case of ;
WNYC, operated by New York
City, which is demanding full time.'

the Byrd expedition is just at the present spending the winter
preparing for the summer scientific and exploration activi
ties which will begin in October. Constantly in touch by
radio with the intrepid party, the world "back home" learns
that live winter's labor is -calling-for considerable ingenuity
of a sort that makes the explorers eligible for tho title of i
inventor. They are devising better sleeping bags, windproof '
clothes, shoes that keep the water out and the feet health-'
fully ventilated, an anti-frostbite mask and apparatus essen
tial to polar aviation and life. News reports of the hardships
imposed upon the explorers by Juno snowstorms and below
zero weather makes it a wee bit easier for the folks lack
home to endure scorching days and hot nights. After all,
sleeping without many covers is better than shivering in a
sleeping bag. i

The Fourth of July is tho anniversary of the Declaration
of Independence of these United States. It is a holiday.
The average citizen and his family expect to enjoy a "rest,"
by motor, by rod and line, by golf-club, by swimming-suit,
by picnic-basket, by the noisy and futile fire-cracker; some,1
perchance, by a good old snooze at home.
The two facts remain ; the Fourth of July is an important ,
anniversary; it is a holiday. How would it be for every
American to combine, for as little as five minutes, those two
facts; devote part of the holiday to thoughtful considera
tion of the anniversary? i
Do wc commemorate this Fourth the fathers who were the
heroes of a magnificent event; or do we celebrate rather the
fruits of their efforts? Would the Fourth be the groat day
it is if their efforts had come to naught, or if the United,
Slates had become a less imposing people? The truth is,!
we celebrate both; both the father who founded and the
wonderful thing that has grown from that foundation. In
other words, we are remembering all good citizens of (hat
day, and since that day, who have contributed to the nation- j
al welfare. Kach Fourth marks a year in which many useful
men and women have crossed the line; their memory, too,!
is enshrined, or should be, in the celebration.
To bring it nearer home, the time will come when we, too,
are pait of the past for which the people of the United Stales
wilt exult some Fourth of July. Does the quality of our
citizenship, our service to the nation, merit that considera
tion? Shall we have contributed anything al all to warrant
our successors in perpetuating the occasion fur anything
other than the noble foundation? '
It is a fair question, and a necessary one. The duty of
citizenship is not arduous, although plain. It implies a high
standard of national government, the choice of good men
of steadfast purpose for public office, the intelligent and
unselfish participation of every American in the business of
government. A subject worth giving five minutes of your
time to.
