Epidemic Wave Expected
to Break Over Oregon
; ; This Year
By !r. Fmlerk'k Strieker -
An epidemic wavo of mi;aUs
will undoubtedly break over Ore
gon this year. Kor a number uf
years the records ot tho state
board of bualth . show that every
third ycur we huvo had little
niuaslea in Oregon. There are ex
ceptioiu to all rules and In J 9-8
whilo we should have hud Uttlo or
no measles we actually had a lur
gvr number. The following table
illustrates thu occurrence of
inensk-a in the state.

i Children under three yeun old
always get the worst of it from
measles no mutter if the prevalence
Is great ur small. While less than
20 per cent of all cases occur in
children under three years old, 75
lier.cent of the deaths occur among
this a;e group. With an epidemic
of measles impending and the
probability of frequent recurrent
outbreuks In the future. It becomes
extremely important that parents
of young children understand that
measles Is really a serious infec
tion for those under three years.
To postpone the attack until after
the fifth birthday is to cut down
the probabilly of death enormous
ly. Chief reliance fur postponing
tho attuuk must be placed upon
, thu prevention of exposure. Mea
sles is nearly always spread from
pei-son to person. To catch It an
individual must usually come in
contact or close association with
other persons who already have It.
Keep welt children away from sick
ones. During measles season an
especial alertness In this respect
may prove advantageous.
i'rvveiithm IWflciilt
The prevention of measles Is an
exceedingly .difficult mutter be
' cause of the universal susceptibil
ity, and because of the fact that
the infection can be conveyed long
before tho rush has appeared, and
the case has been recognized. AH
cases of measles should be "iso
lated. AH susceptible contacts
should be Isolated for two weeks.
The spread of measles can only be
controlled by dally Inspection. It
Is a simple matter to Inspect a
large number of children as the
Inspection need not be a very
searching one. New foct will be
removed before they cun do much
liarm.
Closing the schools has little ef
fect In preventing .the--spread- of
Y measles. As the disease Is spread
in the pre-eruptlve sluge, it Is suf
ficient to examine Die chldren each
morning before they enter school
for symptoms of a cold, injection
of cycu, running at the nose.
' cough, sore throat, fever, but espe
cially the spots that are .found in
tho mouth. ' .
