; Washington correspondents remark that one of the first
things President Hoover must do is decide whether or not be
will continue the presidential custom of taking half an hour
or more from each day's official duties to shake hands with
tho long lines of tourists that visit the White House.
During the days immediately following his inaugural the
crowds were much larger than usual, and included a consider
able number of personal friends and acquaintances. H is
expected that the number will shortly shrink lo the average
of about 500 a day an average that has been maintained
pretty consistently since the beginning of the Harding ad
ministration. . ,
This business of shaking hands with the president is an
old American custom. It started many years ago, and prac
tically overy president has observed it. Woodrow -Wilson
suspended it during the war, and after the armistice was not
in good enough health to resume it; but except for that one
gap the practice has gone on for no one knows quite how long.
On tho face of things, it is a good custom. It is befitting
a democracy, where all citizens nro created equal. The poor-
est citizen in the country can shake the hand of his president,
provided he can get to Washington; tho White House, sym-i
bol of the government's majesty, is open to all -comers, no I
