tary of treasury! It's true he doesn't inspire personal lik
ing, but it's also true thnt he's tecn a most efficient man
in that job and Hoover adores efficiency.
To say that a majority of the people in the state favor
some kind of income tax is probably true, but it is also prob
ably futile. The more the idea of a stale income tax is
talked, the more variety there is in the opinions on what its
provisions should bo. There are more kinds of income tax
than there are beauty creams and goodness knows that's
awful! We can't become one bit enthused over any recom
itiendation for an income ,tnx because there Beems to lie no
; hance of agreement. Any variety that gets by the legis
lature probably won't get by the people at a referendum..
So the law makers should devote their time to something
.-more practical. Try something about' which the public j
doesn't have such set ideas. The income tax idea has gone
stale,. in Oregon and wo can best wait until conditions are
more favorable.

( THE FIVE-DAY WEEK
That Henry Ford iH in earnest about bin five-cluy working
week cannot lie jcisiti(!. He in for it to the extent that he
has employed 30,000 men to make it possible in his Detroit
factories. If each of these men j-eceives the standard Ford
wajfe of $5 a day, the automobile wizard's investment in his
latest idea will be ?KiO,000 a day.
Ford thinks a worker can produce more in a week by
working five days and resting two than by working five and
a half or six days and resting one and a half or one. So he
has adopted the five day plan for his o1i benefit as well as
for altruistic reasons. Thin modern Moses emerges from
clouds of factory smoke with a revised Decalogue, on which
Uio undent commandment is made to read, "Five davs shalt
thou labor and do all thy" work, and on the sixth and seventh
thou shalt rest."
The five-day week has found favor with the American
reiteration of Labor, the cloak and suit industry and labor
in general, but there are some who wish with "William Clis
sold," a creature of 11. G. Wells' making, that "the ancient
people who invented the week had invented it longer and
larger and with more than one day of rest at the end of it.'
If the Mosaic law and custom did not forbid it, there
doubtlessly would be many workers who would divide their
month into two labor periods of 12 days each, separated by
rest periods of .three or four days, deluding on the length
of the month. The present Sabbath is merely a pause in
man's toil ; it is neither a rest nor a change. The laborer comes
back to work Monday morning less disposed for work than
when he left it Saturday noon. Which may be his fault as
much as the fault of a six-day system.
