A recent survey of the touring
conditions over the state made by
the Oregon Htato Motor association
showed that tourist truvol in Ore
gon Increased 'J. 8 per cent in June

Hote. registrations were checked
in addition to the checking of traf
fic on highways, and tho result
wliowed' that tho greatest increase
In tourist travel hud taken place
on Tho Dallcs-CallCoruiu highway
with. tho Hoosovelt highway rank
ing second.

the gain of 128 over 1927 on these
two highways.
- Bend alonu showed a gain In
California registrations of 3U0 per
cent in June lata over tho same
. period as of 1127.
Hotels Get .More Triule
Tho figures showed conclusively
Jhat-so far as California traffic
was concerned, the hotel through
out the state were actually getting
mora business than ever before,
even though the condition of tho
. highways south of the Oregon lino
in California is nut of the best, and
construction work is taking place,
on every highway leading north in
to Oregon. . ' , .
Added to this is tho result of a
personal Investigation inudo in
California by tho writer of this re
port, showing that financial
troubles In California, culminating
In the Uank of Italy stock decline,
lias .directly effected one out of
every four families In tho state, and
transportation companies report
that numerous cancellations of re
servations have occurred following
the flnuncial crash of tho latter
purt of June. . " ...
Notwithstanding these dcrlment
al factors, California tourists of a
better class are certainly hitting
tho trail as of yore us is evidenced
by tho in crease In hotol regis! ra
tions along tho California routes
as Indicated.
In conclusion, tho survey shows
that there has been an actual gain
in California registrations in 1928
over 1927 even though commercial
registrations in certain portions oC
the state, such as at Klamath Kails,
have fallen off considerably in tho
same period. These actions. oX. th.Q,
Bttftrr'artr now -being worked' by
jobbers from Oregon rather than
from California. The survey would
indicate, however, that Portland
hotel men have not shared In this
gain to Its fullest extent, and that
tho higher class residential hotels
Jiavi been the chief sufferers.
