I'rnfessor:
tiorseback ; some went in during the area's first years as a na
tional park. Others have traveled the broad, smooth high
way as it is today. And all are enthusiastic.
It's nYltfossible to describe th(Hnke' Sh'Hlts magnificent
surroundings. Pictures fail to do it justice. But it is prop
erly known as one of the most remarkable scenic wonders on
the Pacific coast. It's therefore if notable asset for Oregon,
n attraction that brings thousands of tourists to the state
each year, that will bring increasing thousands in years to
come. Last year, for example, there were 87,000 people vis
ited Crater lake. In 1920 there were less than 20,000, which
.indicates how a scenic wonder may grow in popularity.
One of the most important factors in making Crater lake
popular for motor and rail tourists alike is the Lodge built
atop the rim
has had many complimentary things said of him, his hotel,
and his hospitality. But none of them could be classified as
unwarranted. It's an ideal place in which to stop. Accom
modations are good. Meals are too good. The menus too
easily destroy one's determination to keep an athletic figure.
A good appetite is one thing every visitor needs. The whole
atmosphere is pleasant, congenial, restful. It's the kind of
lesort hotel one wants but seldom finds.
Failure to mention the service at the Lodge, and those
who provide it in such large and efficient measure, when
speaking of Crater lake would be an undeserved slight. Uni
versity of Oregon students, boys and girls, care for every
need. Girls handle the dining room and lobby stands. Boys
handle the baggage, keep the big fire-place blazing, do the
"chores." And a courteous, well trained lot they are. A
staff of G5 people is maintained at the Lodge throughout
the season.
Incidentally it is well to state that this National Park
company operating at our own Crater lake was reported to
the Department of Interior last year us the most efficiently
nun in the United States. Mr. Price has another achievement
to his credit. The government conducted a survey of book
keeping systems in the various national parks and after more
than n year of studv their auditors annroved the Ciuter Ijike

Crater lake and its charm for those who enjoy the unusual,
tho magnificent in nature, but the significant thing to most
tesidents of Eastern Oregon who visit it is that Crater lake
offers little if anything more to the vacationist and tourist
than the lake basin of the Wallowa. As one sees the excel
lent and thoroughly satisfying way in which the Crater Lake
area is capitalized, and contemplates the value of it nm-k nnH
