that Bob is a whale of a success as a highway commissioner

whale of a success as a congressman and we'd like to have him.
The Observer regrets very much the resignation of Mr.
Cobu.-n from the city commission and his removal, together
with his fine family, to Walla Walla. CUv. Coburn has been
cn excellent commissioner. Since the first day in office he

People who have-no intention of ever letting themselves
jjet caught alone on a desert island are always making out
lists of tho books they'd want with tlient hi such an emerg
ency. . Gustav Davidson, 32 years old, author and book
lcviewer, is off to u South Sea island said lo be uninhabited
by any while man and not too densely populated with na
tives. He is taking just three books with him: the World
Almanac, a dictionary, and the Bible.
f ; One's puipose in seeking solitude would have much to do
with the choice of books lo put in one's pockets, we imagine,
but in the present case the author hits nu pped out a good
Bizcd piece of work for himself. He intends to write two
novels, a travel book, a diary, some short stories and a play
based on life of the islands. He will hardly have time for
light reading; his choice of books may be more than suffi
cient, lie has an active mind, apparently, and the capacity
lor enjoying his own society.
What would happen to most people if they were forced
to spend a considerable time on a South Sea island unin
habited by whites? With an almanac, a dictionary, and
tho Bible? Without friends or anyone who had experienced
the average social contacts? Without anyone with whom to
iplay bridge or pinochle or with whom one might gossip a
bit at times?
' Being thrown entirely on one's own rerources, with only
the society of one's self to enjoy or hate, with only one's own
mind as company that is an experience that would find
many of us ill equipped to make the most of the orpartunity
of solitude. Human friends and acquaintances, social con
tacts play too important a part in most lives. Happy is the
man who can seek solitude, in company with three books and
rn active, creative mind, with confidence that his will be a
huppy and Inoadoning experience. Such a man need have
little fear of losing friends, family, or fortune. Ho can find
happiness always within himself.
