Wright Classic
Screened
At Arcade
j When n novel read by virtually
( everyone Is produced as screen en
tertainment, - the film producer
feela the weight of his responsib
le to the followers of the novelist.
Probably no novel of modern
times has been so widely rend as
Harold Hell Wright's "The Shep
herd of the Hills." which was not
only a "best-seller" for over it year
after Its publication, hut a consis
tently popular book over- since.
Kor that reason, the bringing forth
of Its screen version Is a real re
sponbibltity. t'harlea It. Itogers. who pro
duced tho story in an ulahoratc
film version for Kirst National Pic
tures and which will be the attrac
tion at the Arcade theater fur
three days starling today, felt this
responsibility so keenly that ho
spent months In careful prepara
tion, before a scene of the film was
shot.. Albert ttogcll, who was not
only a potable film director but
oiio .enthused over the possibilities
of the novel as screen material,
i was selected to direct, as the very
'first step.
I.. Then up all-star fast was select
efl will) great care. Acting ability
plus fitness to the character type
respired were the two qualifica
tions that won each player who
appears in his role. '('Hen locution,
as many as possible being on the
actual story locale, jyvere mapped
out. Meanwhile, the adaptation of
tho novel was being written by
Marlon Jackson. .
i "Probably Hie most Important
i single Kepi In producing a satis
factory screen version of it famous
novel Is the selection of actors to
portray the story characters," r.
lingers observes. "We devoted
great pains to the cast selection,
and believe that It will meet wit It
the approval of all readers of the"
novel."
' After an Intensive canvass of the
entire film Industry, Alee It. I-Ynn-cis
was selected to play the tit lo
role tti "lhe 'Shepherd of the
Hilts:" .Mclly O'Oay and John
Holes, yore- chosen to carry the
romantic burden; MaUhew Beta to
play the vllllan role and Uotnaine
1'leMlng to enact the part of th"
(izark patriarch, "Old Matt."
j other notable fiirures in the cast
are Otis'; Harlan. Joseph Bennett.
Maurice Murphy, t'arl Stoekdale.
Marion Houglas. and John W'esl-w-ood.
Beautiful photography that
enhances the 'entertainment qual
ity of the whole production was
coutiihutTd hy Sol Pollto and his
staff of cineinatographers. Part of
the picture was filmed In the
. ( zarks and In Ptah.
"French Dressing"
Scof es As
Comedy of . Paris ...
A delightul story, which unfolds
wllh real sparkle. Is "French
Dressing", which opened yesterday
at the Star theater and which will
be shown, again tonight for the last
time.
The plot , is both amusing and
sincere, and tellH the story of ti
cold little Boston wife who really
learned how to live through a trip
to Paris. Lois Wilson Is the wife,
and her transformation from the
prim Boston matron. wl h long
tresses, to the beautiful girl with
l obbed hair and Paris gowns. Is
realistically portrayed under tin
expert direction of Allan Dwan. It
may be added Ihat Miss Wilson
has never looked more lovely In
.her screen career than she floes In
this picture. No one who sees Lois
In this film will ever regret that
she bobbed her hair.
In fact, t h rough out the picture,
the cast ibies excellent work. II. B.

' The story hns many angles, par

has a delightul twist. And of
course the situation of finding Lois

The scenes In Paris and LoTo

latter being the work of Kruest
