; ' "Hie public now expects philosophy to have something to ii
say in regard to industry, art, politics, education, religion, j -war-making
and drama."
That sounds reasonable enougli, if philosophy is what it
professes to be a system of thought that is above all the
arts and sciences, seeking to explain them. all, put 'them all
in their places and weave them into a logical system.
The speaker seems to have gone pretty far, though, when
he defined philosophy as "wisdom which always will find a
hearing." True philosophers have often been put to death or
exiled because the people didn't want to hear them which)
is too literal an interpretation of his statement. True wisdom
does live. It lives far beyond the mere lifetime of its discoverer.
