AGE AND DEPENDENCE
- The Insurance companies are often coming out with tor

ly people. They want people to buy insurance while young,

; A survey hy the Natiouul Civic Fedeiation finds more
;cheering news: ".More than one in four of the M,S15 per
. sons surveyed had property worth $10,000 or more, and near
ly six in ten had either that amount of property or an annual
!income or at least $1000. Only 29.5 per cent it?iortcd no
'property, and in all only 200 cases of destitution were found."
! This is good, but it should be analyzed a bit. Having a
ipiece of property worth $10,000 or more doesn't mean in
dependence in any sense of human comfort. That sum in
ivestcd at 6 per cent means only $600 a year, in the savings
Ibnnk only $100. Six hundred dollais, or even four hundred
dollars, is a longVay from actual pauperism. But if that is
-all an elderly man or 'woman has, does it spell comfort? What
of illness? What of years when some sort of nursing is
needed the minimum of domestic care when one can no
longer cook or make leds or clean a room ?
An annual income of $1000 conies nearer independence in
fact. But that is pivtty close to the edge when one con
sider the actual needs of age.
It's good that there are so few destitute, that so many
have property or incomes. But it will be a great deal liettor
uhen everylxidy has more. One can stand quite a bit of haid
:voik and saving and even haidship'in the caily yeai-s. In'
ihe mature ones it is comaratively simple to earn enough !
o le quite on one's own. But in the seventies that's thei
time when one needs income without work. Dependence in
fhildhood is the normal thing. It is in old age that the.
bread of dependence is bitter.
