been developed on land purchased
by Hie state. Many of them, how
ever, have been mnde possible hy
gifts of purchase money by citizens,
or by deeding of lands to the state
for park, use.

The Flora roud Ik now ' in the
best condition it has ever been
since the eunty was settled, even
with ten miles of unfinished grade,

For 25 miles, from Enterprise to
Red Kir, the state and forest high
way is a splendid road. The lower
seven mile:), surfaced last, yeafv
is perfect, and, the nest seven miles
is in excellent condition Then
conies the forest road of more than
Kl miles, which Is smoother than
in any previous summer. H has
gradually widened' with use but is
still too narrow, especially on Snow
hill and on occassional fills in the
fori st. Then1 are many curves
where the vision 1 is limited and
drivers must use caution.

Heady to Surface Highway
A few 111 lies north of I ted Fir,
Joslyn & McAllister, who have the
contract for surfacing the la miles
of new grade, have located their
quarry and are about ready to go
to work. They w ill begin lit t he
south end at the connection with
the old forest highwey. They took
a huge ilesel gasoline engine to
the quarry last Friday to run tim
crusher.
H The contractors have a big job
on hand to finish the. 10 miles of
grade in the three months of open'
season remaining this fall. It is
recognized that t hey have plenty
of equipment and they can work
night and day, so it is possible that
they can complete the contract be

sections of the Sunset and Inland
Empire, highways between the gen
eral terminals of Eastern" and
Walla Walla has been authorized
by the slate highway committer.
The oiling to he done was recom
mended hy the district engineers,
subject to the direction of the state
highway engineer.
The commit lee also approved
construction of u guard rair on
the canyon road between Ellens
burg and Vukimu at an estimated
cost, of ?l8,32ft. The work Is to
be done hy force account. 'Dip
improvement, declared necessary
as a safety measure, will include
some grading lo raise the super
elevation on the curves.

most productive farming areus on
the north side. '

in the crankcase. Naturally it will thin out
more readily than in cold weather and will
